Yellow freesias, fresh apples and quince preserves perfume this lovely, medium-bodied Malvasia from Istria. Dry on the palate yet elegantly fruity, it balances bright, fresh apple and tangerine flavors with nervy acidity and a lemon pith astringency on the finish.

Both the nose and palate of this medium-bodied Plavac Mali are soft and pulpy with overripe red fruit accented by the scent of golden hay. Bright acidity in the midpalate adds freshness, and moderate tannins are mouthcoating with a soft, powdery grain.

Aromas of black currant jam, plum compote and menthol entice on the nose of this Teran (Refosco in Italy) from Istria, but there’s a dense, broad feel to this wine that detracts from the deep black fruit and supple tannins that are otherwise quite pleasant.

Juicy red plums and cherries, vanilla and smoke are pleasant on the nose and palate of this Bordeaux-style red from Istria, but gain freshness and verve from layers of bramble, menthol and fresh herbs. Full bodied with exceptionally integrated tannins that are soft and round, it’s a big surprise at $13.

Undeniably rustic yet intriguing, this Plavac Mali is powerful on the nose and palate with aromas of overripened black fruit, freshly harvested hay and alfalfa and an abundance of earthy leather and mushroom notes. Significant aeration reveals a more feminine side with concentrated, dried black cherry fruit, but one that’s still aggressive and tannic on the finish.
