Here’s a soft, delicious Syrah for drinking now with broiled or grilled meats. It’s nice and dry and full-bodied, with interesting flavors of blackberries, sweet leather, bacon, red licorice, herbs and black pepper. At this price, it’s a great restaurant by-the-glass selection.

Bright, fresh, fruity and light bodied, with pretty peach, apple and spice flavors that leave a crisp, clean and pleasant finish. Fairly sweet, but refreshing.

Quite oaky and charry on the nose, with black cherry and plum aromas circulating. Drinks soft and round in the mouth, with melted tannins and low acids. A warm-climate Cab that’s delicious and easy to like.

Shows true cool-climate varietal character in the aromas and flavors of cherries, cola, pomegranates and rhubarb pie, with complicating notes from charred oak barrels. Very good, mouthfilling and dry, with brisk acidity. Should develop in the bottle for a few years.

A lovely, ripe style of Sauvignon Blanc, with touches of stone fruit alongside citrus, gooseberries and a touch of herbaceousness. The ripeness and four months on the lees have imparted a sense of creaminess to the mouthfeel, yet the wine finishes zippy and fresh.

More like the 2000 than the richer ’97 or ’99, J. Lohr’s 2005 Hilltop Cab is very fruity, but a little too soft. The cherry, currant, chocolate, anise and spicy plum flavors have a melted quality. Drink soon.

Lots of acidity and dryness in this Chardonnay. It will strike some as austere and lean. But it’s fascinating in its citrus fruits and minerals, which seem to come from the stones of the Arroyo Seco. Oak influence adds much-needed notes of buttered toast. Gets better and better as it warms in the glass.

Here’s a fine everyday Cabernet for drinking now with your favorite meat dish or cheese. It’s soft and rich in berry, currant and spice flavors. Could be a little drier, but it sure is tasty.

Big, big, big, in every respect. Fruit, acids, oak, body, extract, it’s all packed into a huge wine that fills the mouth with citrus, apple and guava flavors wrapped in a rich, custardy texture. Yet the wine is balanced and elegant. Calls for high-end pairing at the table.
