Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Named after local nobility in the city of Borba, this is a popular brand in Portugal. In its white manifestation, the wine is soft, very clean, with pear and cinnamon flavors, the texture just moving toward fat, but working well as a food wine.

A classic Alentejo brand, the Marquês de Borba exists and has lent his name to a range of wine hugely popular in Portugal. This is big, packed with raisins and generous fruit, and solid, dry tannins. A great wine with powerful fruit and the potential for aging. It's traditional, but like this, tradition is good.

Earthy, meaty aromas are a prominent character of this single varietal wine. They are balanced by very ripe, raspberry flavors with a layer of dry tannin. This is an open, fresh wine that would be great with barbecues.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is an exotic blend of Aragonês, Trincadeira, Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon. With sophisticated tannins and layers of wood, this is a powerful, full-bodied wine, with just a touch of earthiness. Spice and herbs give extra complexity.

Red fruits andsoft tannins with wood hints give this wine a fresh, immediate appeal. The fruit structure is slightly hot and leathery, but this is balanced with ripeness and very soft acidity.

Syrah is a grape with a great future in the Alentejo, according to João Portugal Ramos. This wine shows that potential. Soft and rich with fine perfumes and some mineral character, it is full, powerful and immediately appealing. There is some wood, but it just underlines the rich fruit.

The huge concentration of this wine reflects the hot 2003 vintage. There are aromas of ripe fruit skins, and flavors of big, juicy, hugely rich black fruits, with dark tannins and a hot texture.

The T is for Touriga Nacional, the Merlot for Merlot, and the two blend easily into a wine that revels in the perfumes and tight tannins of the Touriga and the smoothness of ripe Merlot. The fruit is black, dense, but not too powerful, leaving fresh ripeness as well as a dry, tannic structured core.

A pleasant, simple, freshly citrus wine that makes great apèritif drinking. There are melon and apricot flavors, but the acidity holds everything tautly together.
