A more refined and elegant nose than the Chave above, the wine opens with a powerful shot of sweet and perfumed aromas mixed with the traditional gamey and smoked meat character of these wines, very perfumed and almost overripe; sweet and earthen in the mouth with the full range of flavors of these wines; big and earthy with huge layers of acidity and powerful tannins, but all is in balance; great grip and a long finish with sour cherry and red plum flavors; elegant and refined. Perfumed nose, great aromatics of smoked meat, black fruits, earth and that wonderful sauvage nature that these wines have; sweet, rich and meaty in the front of the mouth, begins to close in as it passes through the palate, taking on a leanness that does not appeal to some; clean and classic in the mouth with black fruits and lemony flavors; strong finish if a bit dry; I have had this wine many times over the past several years, and it remains rock steady, and very classic in the leaner style of this vintage. Fierce nose, lots of alcohol in this wine, but also nice aromas of black fruits, toffee, burnt brush, smoke, cherries, pepper and earth; really hard and tough on the palate; alcoholic and woody, missing the richness of fruit that these wines have; muscular and aggressive, but lacking depth and definition; this is just the raw elements of wine without the complete picture. (14/20)

Sweet and perfumed nose with lots of aromatics mixed with ripe black fruits, earth and spices, complex and elegant aromas; sweet, rich and intense in the mouth, loads of black fruit, plums, cherries, spiced fruit; still has gawky tannins in the body of the wine that will need more time to evolve; well-structured and balanced with a great future. (18/20) Another bottle at the Veritas Group’s dinner at Fleur de Sel was consistent in the main, perhaps showing a bit more licorice and caramel in the nose, and a bit more softness on the palate and more evolved. I would not change my earlier score, however.

Deep, rich, ripe nose filled with black cherries and smoked meat, very perfumed and elegant with complex nuances of aromas and a powerful hold on the olfactory senses; sweet and ripe fruit on the palate, black cherries and red fruits predominate; nicely balanced; big wine, still quite young and showing the impetuousness of adolescence, but this wine will develop beautifully; long elegant but taut finish loaded with cranberry tannins and spices. (19/20)

Wonderfully complex nose of leather and smoked meat mixed with green herbs and black pepper, gamey and ripe with an interesting metallic touch in the background; sweet and gamey in the mouth; classic combination of smoked meat with black fruits and incursions of citrus and red cherry; smooth and silky in the mouth, but with character; more citrus fruit and pepper at the finish; elegant and refined with a pepper and spicy mantle over the body of the wine. I have had this wine many times over the past several years, and it just keeps getting better; sweet and rich nose with strong herbal and black pepper aromas, mixed with sour cherries and leather, and with a very intense and perfumed set of aromas; sweet and intense in the front of the mouth with concentrated but elegant sour cherry flavors; gets bigger in the mouth as it moves across the palate, bringing forth earthen and more sweet black cherry flavors to blend in with the earlier more citric quality of the wine; the presence of big and dry tannins is still evident in the structure, but was more pronounced a few years back; powerful and focused at the end with big lemony acidity mixing with the fruit flavors to create a deep and complex ending.
