Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
So tannic and astringent, you can barely feel anything else in the mouth. Blackberry? Cherry? Hard to tell. Dry, tough and puckery; not likely to go anywhere.

Jaffurs Syrah - 2001

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Soft and velvety in the mouth, with striking aromas of mint, pepper and blackberries, this blended Syrah from Craig Jaffurs represents a solid value. It even firms up a bit on the finish, suggesting that while it is delicious now, it should drink well for at least 4–5 years.

Jaffurs Syrah - 2003

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
I love the rich, chewy texture on this Syrah. It’s all velvet and chocolaty fudge. The flavors are very ripe and forward, showing blackberry tart, mocha and charred oak. There are also some furry tannins and a touch of sweetness from the alcohol and fruit. Needs time. Best 2007–2010.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Ripe and forward, with blackberry jam, sweetened espresso, white pepper and chocolate flavors, this wine shows much the same quality as Jaffurs’s more expensive single-vineyard wines. It’s just a bit rougher and sharper.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Honeyed in peach, papaya, fig and pear fruit flavors, with a dusting of brown spices, this wine has good acidity. It’s a pleasant, zesty outdoor sipper.

Jaffurs Viognier - 2003

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A very nice wine, lush and drinkable, that demonstrates not only the pedigree of its vineyards (Stolpman and Thompson), but also the deft approach of the winemaker. Soft and juicy, it offers layers of crushed cherry, cassis, red currant, licorice, beef jerky and black pepper flavors, wrapped into rich, fine tannins. Drink now through 2010.

Jaffurs Grenache - 2006

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A blend of the Tablas Creek and Alban clones, this Grenache is from the Stolpman Vineyard. Made using whole clusters in the fermentation, it’s densely textured and brooding in tannins. But there’s an enormous core of cherry fruit and spice. Should blossom in 2009 and hold for several more years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s not much difference between Jaffurs’ three cool-climate, single-vineyard Syrahs (Bien Nacido, Thompson and Melville). This one’s firm, taut and rich in chocolaty-blackberry, roasted coffeebean and spice flavors, with a sweet finish.

Jaffurs Syrah - 2002

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Perhaps a bit more tannic than the Bien Nacido bottling, but that’s splitting hairs. Rich in ripe, sweet blackberry and mocha fruit, with a long finish. The sweetness calls for something that echoes it, like the char that grilling gives to meat.

Jaffurs Syrah - 2002

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This winery’s least expensive Syrah is a value, because it’s pretty much as good as the single-vineyard bottlings. It’s rich in blackberry, cassis, mocha and white pepper, with intricately woven tannins. Great with a barbecued steak.
