Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Very interesting nose with layers of herbs and spices, definite aroma of caraway seeds, black pepper, lots of perfumed and sweet fruit; spicy and intense in the mouth with lots of concentration of fruit and herbs, black and red cherries, good acidic component, but not overwhelming as these wines sometimes tend to be; succulent and mouthwatering wine; long finish, very balanced and polished. Sweet nose, very aromatic and richly textured, lots of exotic fruit aromas, deep and enticing nose; sweet, clean and pure on the palate, this is a wonderfully made wine; great focus and lots of sweet black and red fruits define the flavors of this wine; big and almost muscular while retaining a reserve and elegance that one expects from the Jayer wines; long, smooth finish with great balance and finely honed textures, like silk; hard to imagine how this could have been better. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
This is a troubled wine as evidenced by a flat, uninteresting and diffuse nose, there is the aroma of sweet fruit, but it is murky and vague at best; the wine is no better in the mouth, presenting a one-dimensional set of flavors that have uninteresting sweetness, but no real definition; the finish is short and flat, and while the wine is certainly palatable, it is far below the norm that one expects for the property and the vintage; I am not familiar enough with the vineyard or the wine in this vintage to say whether this is an atypical bottle. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
First nose is musty and filled with a heavy sweetness, becoming more aggressive and hard with time in the glass, hints of metal; first taste is sweet, but also filled with a bitter almond taste that is off-putting; there is ripe fruit in this wine, but it is not elegant or balanced, and the entire wine seems out of synch with hot, clumsy flavors and a coarse, chunky finish. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
The first nose was troubling with musty, damp, almost corky smells, but then it seemed to revive and put forth perfumed and spicy fruit aromas with a touch of smoke and earth; sweet in the front of the mouth, loaded with fruit; the mid-mouth exhibits nice balance and definition; lots of fruit, with sour red cherries and ripe black cherries mixing together in a complex set of flavors; long finish and really quite elegant for an NSG. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
A very big and powerful nose starts this wine with aromas of black fruits and alcohol, also showing the presence of black cherry, green herb, and licorice scents; sweet and focused in the front of the mouth, loaded with black cherry flavors; this wine has power and muscle, but maybe a bit too much; the iron fist is here, but there is no velvet glove; big finish with strong flavors, but also a bit hot and aggressive; maybe a bit of an overachiever, giving up elegance in the process. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
An overripe and somewhat funky nose at first, but it regains its poise, showing more balanced sweet fruit aromas with zippy alcohol scents and a touch of lemon zest; sweet and ripe in the mouth with the touch of black cherries, but mostly ripe plum flavors; quite evolved in the mouth, but still vibrant and interesting, though perhaps lacking the complexity and focus of some of the other vintages; good solid finish, good quality but not as memorable as some of the others in the tasting. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet and exotic nose, though slightly tough with emerging aromas of acidity and wood, with a hint of metal shavings, still a powerful presence with dominating aromas; surprisingly citric and tight in the mouth, one could almost say this wine is not ready to drink; there are deeply layered flavors of red and black fruits, however, housed in a powerful, yet restrained vessel; a long finish, but one cannot escape a touch of greenness and hardness that may never disappear. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
What can one say about these wines; intense nose, complex and virtually bottomless, rich aromas of black cherry compote, licorice, grasses and herbs, green olive and spice scents mixed with woods and truffles; huge wine in the mouth with layers of dense flavors and rich and ripe fruit mingled with classy tannins; lots of cherry fruit and spice liven the mix, but the wine exhibits both power and elegance; gives real meaning to the “iron fist in a velvet glove” description; quite a peacock’s tail in the mouth, and at the finish; this deserves its reputation. Deep and intense nose, lots of black cherry fruit aromas mixed with perfumed floral scents and sweet, exotic spices; big wine in the mouth, intense and focused fruit flavors in the front of the mouth with black cherry and plum dominant; layered and quite complex; long finish; this is an elegant and polished wine. (19/20)
