Dense, dry and young, this is a Syrah for the cellar. With 10% Petite Sirah, it has some fierce tannins, and is a little soft, but possesses the inherent balance to age. Give it two or three years, then enjoy the hearty cherry, cassis, leather, cocoa and balsamic flavors for a couple more years.

From an increasingly well-regarded (and expensive!) vineyard. Wondrously complex, with aromas of blueberries and thyme, vanilla, blackberries and toast. Very ripe and extracted. The dense fruity flavors have the thickness of a liqueur, but it’s balanced and graceful.

More forward and less complex than Jeff Cohn’s Alegria Vineyard bottling, with bright, sweet raspberry, cherry, and spice aromas and flavors, and a touch of sweetness in the finish—but not too much. Tannins are light and silky soft. A very pretty and refined wine.

You’ll find some veggie notes alongside superripe cherry and blackberry pie filling ones in this robust, unbalanced Syrah. It’s also way too high in alcohol, with 15.8%, which makes it sweet and hot.

Smells a little veggie and unripe, and turns thin in the mouth without much fruit. Feels dry and crisp in acids, with smooth tannins, but not offering much sensual pleasure, and not an ager.

Dry Creek Valley has a natural affinity for Marsanne, and particularly in this balanced vintage. The grapes got ripe in lemon chiffon, peach and honeysuckle flavors, while a clean crispness and minerality add length and palate interest. Sur lies aging in the barrel brings even richer notes of cream and smoky vanilla. This Marsanne explores the outer reaches of the variety’s possibilities in California.

The sources of this Syrah are all very good, including top vineyards from Santa Barbara, Arroyo Seco, Alexander Valley and Lake County. An example of the art of blending, it’s a lovely wine, rich, dry and balanced, with an earthy edge to the ripe cherry and blackberry flavors.

Not a bad wine, but too soft-heavy and sweet for my tastes, with cherry flavors that are on the medicinal side due to the very high alcohol. Almost 90% charry new oak doesn’t really help.

Rockpile, a mountainy region in Dry Creek Valley, has given in this warm vintage a big young Syrah. Dry and smooth, it bursts with enormously ripe cherry flavors, but also is very tannic. It’s high in alcohol, a potential fault, but something in the acid-tannin structure keeps it balanced, and even elegant. Best now and for the next few years.

Of the winery’s current crop of five Syrahs, this is the next most expensive, but it’s hard to tell why. Possibly because most of the grapes come from Napa Valley, they paid more for fruit. But that means nothing. The wine is tannic and has a glyceriney sweetness to the blackberry and cherry fruit that’s almost syrupy. Doesn’t seem like an ager.
