Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet and ripe nose with lots of black cherry and cedar aromas mixed with earthen and leaf scents, quite aromatic; somewhat disappointing; although the wine has a lot of sweet fruit on first taste with rich almost overripe black cherry flavors, it tastes tired and lacks clarity and crispness on the palate; there is a woody quality to the wine that makes it flat and not particularly interesting; it seems that the wine is past its prime; the finish is noticeably tannic and fading. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Light nose with elegant but quite remote aromas of black cherries, wood, chalk, earthen and complex; typical of the vintage, a lighter more austere set of flavors; there is a good shot of fruit at the very front of the palate, but then the wine assumes a dusty, citric set of flavors that although not unpleasant, are quite austere and border on hard; the wine is an interesting mix of refinement and hardness; long finish with lots of dry lemony flavors and an almost granular texture on the palate; difficult to assess, since one’s appreciation of this wine is based in major part on whether one prefers the lighter dryer flavors and textures of the vintage and the wine itself; Gros continues to produce quality wine, even in the “bad” vintages. Concentration and depth greet the nose of this extraordinary village wine, barnyardy and meaty aromas dominate the nose, mixed with deep and complex sweet aromas, earthy and intense nose; beautiful fruit dominates the front palate of this wine, showing lots of depth and beautiful balance; loaded with black fruit, but also harmonious acidity blends with mature tannins to create a fat wine with a long and elegant finish; this is grand Burgundy, even without the grand cru label. Deep, rich nose with black fruits, cherries and plums, truffles, earth, layers of aromas, mature fruit and floral scents permeate the nose; smooth and rich in the mouth, silky and smooth; complex flavors, layers of citrus fruit and mature tannins add interest to the body of the wine; this wine is still fresh and focused and has a wonderful long finish that keeps a fruit compote flavor on the palate for several minutes. This is a great wine, powerful floral aromas escape the glass to weave a cloud of lilacs and sweet flowers, but also dense aromas of black fruit and earth, very elegant and complex; rich and ripe in the mouth with wonderful sweet cherry flavors at the outset; more complex flavors emerge as the wine opens in the glass; layers of flavors, a nice mix of earth and softened tannins; still light and elegant with complex but silky texture; long finish; this is great wine.
