Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Austere and flinty, a Chablis-like wine of exceptional acidity, rapier texture, and a taste of gunmetal that veers ever so slightly into peach. This is a wine with an edge, a nervy wine that’s super-clean. Don’t think it’s a simple wine. It’s not. —S.H.

From vineyards adjacent to the Russian River bottomlands, a sprightly, tart wine with few of Viognier’s exotic floral character, but nonetheless with the lean, zesty flavors of citrus. In fact, it’s easy to mistake it for Sauvignon Blanc, and a nice one. The acidity gives the palate a real jolt. You might even try this with shellfish. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This simple, fruity wine is a long way from real Champagne, despite the presence of that word on the label. There’s a touch of sweetness, and the flavors of baked apples lead into a somewhat clumsy finish.

Jepson’s Sauvignon Blancs have long been lauded as among Mendocino’s best. Grown along the Russian River, on the flatlands, it’s typically racy and crisp. This version is richer and perhaps oakier than in the past, and emphasizes melon flavors over raw citrus. It has the weight of a Chardonnay, and is clearly designed to go with fine foods. —S.H.

An unusually complex and well-made Sauvignon Blanc. There’s a core of ripe figs, overlaid by honeyed melon flavors that run through the wine from the opening sip to the long, delicious finish. Best Buy.

The first estate Syrah from this well-regarded property advances the argument for inland-Mendocino Rhônes. Has good color and extract, and fine structure and balance. But it does seem a bit thin. From the flats near the Russian River; it’s a wine to watch. —S.H.

Quite light in texture and color. Flavors are pretty ephemeral too, with hints of plum, spice, cherry and herbs. Easy enough to quaff, but where’s the beef?

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This bubbling, fermenting mass of bread dough in a glass packs an aggressive mousse that's rough and rustic. Fresh lime and tonic flavors finish with softer citrus notes of tangerine rind and orange pith. Has a certain raw appeal to it's brashness.

Mainly that old white standby, French Colombard. It will never make a great wine but this one isn’t bad. Sort of like Sauvignon Blanc, filled with tart Meyer lemon fruit flavors and very crisp acidity. It’s got a touch of sugar that balances it out nicely. —S.H.

A ripe and lusty Chardonnay, loaded with green-apple and ripe-fig fruit. The center is zesty and rich, leading to a medium finish.
