Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A little disappointing for a Lodge Hill Shiraz, with prominent eucalyptus notes that are slightly overbearing in the context of otherwise pleasant vanilla and berry flavors. Lacks the richness and depth needed to support all of the menthol. Drink now–2016.

Give this Cab a little time to open, and you'll be rewarded with blackberry and black pepper aromas, and big, smooth plum flavors on the palate. The best part is its chalky-claylike mouthfeel. This is Jim Barry Wines' first foray outside of Clare; the winery has bought a Coonawarra vineyard that's planted on a former cricket field, hence the label and the name.

Meat, plum and penetrating menthol-eucalyptus aromas are assertive and complex. The red fruit on the palate isn’t going anywhere–it’s firm and ripe, and accompanied by a red-licorice flavor. Eucalyptus is wide and lasting on the finish.

A warming, lusty wine, with tannins that are soft and supple enough that the wine can be drunk now. Tastes like plum, caramel and coffee; smells like pure red grapes, plus walnuts and roasted meat. Will cure whatever ails you. Drink now–2010.

Abyss-black and adheres to the unwritten but well understood rule that Armagh must be big and bold, more appropriate for a passionate rendezvous than the dinner table. This vintage offers penetrating eucalyptus, white pepper, even meaty aromas. The palate is full and rich, dealing mixed berries, plum, eucalyptus and a hint of caramel. There are lasting, grippy tannins on the back palate, with notes of wheat bread and licorice on the finish. Drink through 2014. Imported by Negociants USA, Inc.

This very impressive juice shows a rich, complex nose of blackberry, earth, saddle leather, cocoa, molasses and a lovely mint element. The rich, syrupy mouthfeel supports similar ripe flavors. The long finish is deeply fruited, with handsome fig, smoke and licorice notes. Solid stuff—can drink now, but it’s built to last and will be best 2004–2012 and beyond. Cellar Selection.

You could fill your pen with this stuff, it’s that dark. Aromas of black cherry marmalade, cassis and white chocolate, young and fresh. In the mouth, it’s massive and ripe, yet balanced and harmonious, with perky acids and caressing tannins. Be forewarned: Big is not necessarily better. Despite the high score, this wine will drown many foods.

Though it’s crisp and fresh in the mouth, this wine has some weight (and some oily viscosity) to it. Starts off in the mouth with a burst of sweetness, and a limey, grassy streak carries it through to the finish. Nose is fruity, with nectarine and mango highlights.
