This younger-vines mix of Garnacha, Carignan, Cab Sauvignon and Syrah is very attractive and loaded with graphite, schisty mineral and black cherry aromas. The palate comes in waves, with the first delivering plum and berry and the second offering chocolate, herbs and lavender. Quite pretty and very tannic. Hold until 2008, if possible.

Joan Simó had great success in 2005. This wine is excellent and the higher-end Les Eres is outstanding, so bottom line: buy Simó from 2005. Getting back to Sentius, a so-called “second” wine, it is dark, sexy, smooth and shows true Priorat accents of schist, coffee, cola and berry aromas. The flavors are flashy and fresh, with mammoth black cherry, plum and coffee virtually jumping from the glass. A very deep and balanced wine to drink now through 2013.

This blend is 55% old-vines Garnacha, 30% ancient Carignan, and the rest Cabernet. It’s sweet and rich, with aromas of red fruit and a hint of coconut. The palate is classic old-vines stuff: cassis, red plum, beet and plenty of persistence. Yet despite it’s old-vines status, it still tastes young and snappy.

Pungent up front, with dry bayberry, leather, jam notes and schisty minerality. The palate is all about structure, snappy acids, sinewy tannins and lively, full-force red-fruit and plum flavors. Like in the past, this is a top-notch Priorato that holds its form through the acid-driven finish. Best from 2011–2015.

Brand new on the market is this blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet and Syrah, all planted only in 1999. And you know what? It’s pretty solid, with a bright garnet color and toasty aromas. Where it shows its pedigree, or lack thereof, is in the middle, where it’s lean and zesty as opposed to meaty and deep. Falls off after extended time in the glass. Imported by Jorge Ordoñez/Fine Estates from Spain.

A little heavy at first, but airing reveals a robust and stirring bouquet of plum and berry aromas mixed with coffee and leather. The palate is pure and deep, with a lush set of blackberry, ripe plum and berry syrup flavors. Shows a fine structure, a long and warm finish, and the potential to age another 5–8 years.

Carignan and Grenache lead the way on this old-vines classic that is typically excellent but not quite as generous, round and whole as in previous vintages. Still, you will be impressed by the compact nose of thyme, sage and tobacco along with dry red fruit. In addition, the palate of cassis and blackberry is pure and tannic as a rock. Needs time; best in 2009–10.

The definition of old-vines Priorato can be found within this bottle. The Garnacha is very old, the Cariñena even older, and some mature Cabernet Sauvignon adds spine. On the nose, there’s a lot of barrique. The palate is snappy, almost acidic, and thus the flavors run toward pie cherry and raspberry. Classic in style; an Old World throwback. Imported by Jorge Ordoñez/Fine Estates from Spain.

A great Priorat, plain and simple. And while we have always liked Les Eres from Joan Simó, this vintage is the best we’ve tried. The nose is beautiful: coffee, cola, schist, black fruit and herbs rise up. In the mouth, there’s strength but restraint; huge black fruit, pulsing tannins and subtleties. Power and precision as well. A brilliant wine that can be drunk now with decanting, or better: hold for another 4–12 years.
