Mainly Cab, with some of the Portuguese varieties in there. Fairly sweet, with residual sugar of about 12.5%. High alcohol (19%). Not particularly compelling, but clean and balanced.

Aims for the New Zealand style, and largely gets it right. It’s a bone-dry, acidic wine, with a steely minerality and flavors of tart citrus fruits, like lemons, limes and grapefruits. This minimalist approach is sorely welcome in the lineup of California whites.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dry, acidic and earthy, lacking the richness you want in a fine Chardonnay. Could almost be a Pinot Grigio, with its crisp citrus and mineral flavors.

Pretty closed now, showing woody, mulchy notes, but eventually heaves out blackberries and dark chocolate. Rich and refined, and dense, with plush plum, blackberry and oak flavors. Tannic now, but should develop well in the bottle.

There’s a fine red Bordeaux wine somewhere in here, and all it needs is a little time to express itself. Right now, it’s tannic and tight. But then the enormous core of fruit detonates on the palate, exploding in cherries and blackberries, wrapped into firm, ripe tannins. Should have a nice little window, between 2007–2010.

A bit fudge-like, with thick, soft flavors of chocolate and cassis joined by herbal notes of thyme or tea. Turns a bit drying on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A smooth, silky texture supports ripe black cherry, blackberry, cassis, bay leaf, sage, anise, toast and chocolate flavors. Moderate acidity and firm, ripe tannins provide structure. Long on the finish.

Soft and spicy, this Tempranillo shows silky tannins framing flavors of cherries, leather, cedar and white pepper. It’s a nice, dry, low-alcohol wine, and one to watch as Justin tinkers with it in the future.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Although this young wine is tough as nails right now, offering little more than espresso, spice and tart blackberries, it may improve with age. An intense wine that’s clearly not for everyone.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a dry, tart and ultimately uninteresting Viognier. It shows citrus, tropical fruit and floral flavors that are linear and direct. Needs greater richness, especially at this price.
