Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This blend of 49% Grenache, 32% Shiraz and 19% Mataro is full and lush, loaded with brandied cherries and dressed up with touches of cinnamon and cedar. Hints of coffee and vanilla add an exotic tinge to the aromas, while the rich layers of fruit support the elevated (16%) alcohol.

This amply endowed, creamy-textured Cab may not make old bones, but it offers a delicious mouthful of rich cassis fruit, accented by hints of mint, tobacco and dark chocolate. It’s silky enough to drink now, with a long, slightly warm finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Kaesler's Grenache features wonderfully perfumed aromas of dried spices and cherries, but winds up a little thin on the palate, offering little more than crisp, bright watermelony fruit. Drink up.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From vines planted more than a century ago, this richly concentrated, voluptuous wine blossoms with time in the glass, revealing aromas of brandied black cherries and dark chocolate. The tannins are creamy smooth, the length on the palate prodigious. But at 15.5% alcohol, this wine’s warmth is noticeable; opt for drinking it over the next 10 years.

Take superripe Barossa Shiraz from old vines, put it into 80% new American oak and the result is this hedonistic mouthful of wine. It’s full-bodied and creamy in texture; blueberry fruit combines with cola, earth and spice nuances. Long and velvety on the finish, where it picks up hints of cocoa.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine’s concentrated dark fruit shows in the color—a vibrant dark garnet—and in the aromas of blueberry, vanilla and dried spices. The 16% alcohol is well concealed, manifesting only as wonderfully full, creamy density on the palate, magnifying the intense cola, earth and spice complexity. A pronounced peppery, black licorice note adds extra length to the finely textured finish. Drink now–2020.

A Semillon that wants to be a Sauvignon Blanc, with straightforward, crisp citrus and Granny Smith apple flavors and a lean body. A nice everyday white.

Gives an elegant but straightforward overall impression, with forward plum fruit and a subtle, claylike mouthfeel that overshadows all else. Wide bready, spicy aromas unfold on the nose.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This vintage, I preferred this wine to the flagship Old Bastard—it’s more versatile, and at half the price of the Old Bastard, it feels like a steal. Opens with lovely coffee, mocha and earth aromas, with only the slightest trace of barnyard. The fruit on the palate has tremendous staying power—it’s a big basket of fresh-picked berries that just won’t go away.

Gets 100% new French oak for two years, and it shows. This is a big wine, with jammy berry and plum fruit that’s doused in toasty, smoky flavors. Similar caramel-vanilla notes ring true on the nose. Finishes in a crescendo of caramel, and black plum and berry flavors. Excellent, to be sure, but also just massive. Don’t try to drink this with anything other than a date and a bearskin rug—it’s just not going to go with dinner. About 300 cases produced.
