The dominant aroma is cigar box and cigars themselves. Quite dusty and spicy, yet there’s plenty of ripe plum, blackberry and currant. Dry and heady, at 15.1% alcohol, but it has the balance and harmony to pull it off. An extraordinarily likable Zin.

Isn’t it funny how sometimes a winery’s more expensive wine isn’t as good as its less costly one? That’s the case here. This wine is hot in alcohol and overripe in raisiny flavors, while Karly’s Pokerville, at half the price, is terrific.

I love this wine for its smooth, full-bodied exuberance, the way it just takes over the palate and rules. Flavors of wild berries, bitter dark chocolate and coffee are fat and fleshy, and best of all, totally dry, without being overly alcoholic. This is one of the best Zin buys of the year.

With the heat of very high alcohol, the taste of overripe, raisiny fruit and a sweet finish, this is not a successful wine. But then, Mourvèdre is notoriously difficult to control.

Black-currant fruit (from the 20% Petite Sirah in the blend) highlights a meaty, toasty nose. Roasted walnuts, coffee and slightly burnt (but delicious) flavors in a balanced, lingering wine that begs for grilled meats.

A really great mountain Zinfandel that shows luscious power and fruit at a fair price. The flavors of blackberries, cherries, currants, oranges, cloves and white pepper flood the palate and are just wonderful to experience. At this price, buy this Zin by the case.

This is a good wine to explore if you’re interested in California Marsanne. Crisp and soft, it has interesting flavors of tropical fruits, wildflowers, Asian spices, butterscotch and honey. Finishes on the off-dry side.

Starts off with leather, earth, berry and plum aromas, and is fruity and tannic in the mouth. Drinks easy enough, but fairly simple. For early consumption.

With its briary flavors of fresh-picked mountain berries and exotic clove, nutmeg and pepper spices, this Zin defines a more elegant Foothills approach to the variety. The texture is light and silky, not at all heavy, a supple, polished wine of great appeal.

The name suggests certain proprietarily named Ports, and it’s an apt descriptor for this muscular wine, which has superripe flavors of currants and raisins that veer into an overripe tartness. It’s dry, but with very high alcohol.
