Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Bright and lively, with elements of struck flint and lime on the nose, followed by flavors of peach, apple and lime. This medium-bodied Riesling is already starting to soften on the finish, showing the effects of the warm year. Drink it over the next 3–4 years.

Starts off tighter and less giving than the regular Mort’s Block, only gradually displaying its greater potential longevity. Offers crushed stone and lime notes, medium body and a clean green apple and citrus finish right now, but expect it to develop petrol, honey and toast notes within the next several years; drink now–2017.

Here’s a wine with a limited repertoire, but the one tune it’s beating is a good one: pineapple on the nose, pineapple in the mouth and pineapple on the short finish. Intensity and length are in short supply but this is a fine, refreshing choice for unthinking summer sipping. Drink now.

Kilikanoon Chardonnay - 2007

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Like all of winemaker Kevin Mitchell’s Shirazes, this is full-bodied and lushly textured. The point of difference here is the fruit character, which leans toward black olives and espresso, with just enough stewed fruit to provide cushioning. Finishes long and velvety, hinting at vanilla. Drink now–2012.

Kilikanoon Shiraz - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Aged in 100% new French oak, this wine opens with scents of vanilla and pipe tobacco, but also shows a strong core of ripe raspberries. Mixed berries take over on the palate, softly framed by layers of mocha and vanilla. This full-bodied wine’s tannins are creamy in texture, just turning ever so slightly dusty on the long finish. Drink now-2023.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Full and round in the mouth, this lacks the dynamic purity and luxurious texture of its pricier stablemate, The Duke, but it’s still an excellent wine that blends black cherry and strawberry fruit with just a touch of spice. Drink now–2011.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The 2006 Covenant Shiraz, drawn from Kilikanoon’s base in the Clare Valley, adds some savory, herbal notes vaguely reminiscent of rhubarb to a lush, creamy base built on blueberry-blackberry fruit and hints of licorice and espresso. Concentrated and long on the finish, gradually turning from creamy to slightly dusty in texture. Drink now-2020.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A finely judged blend of fruity and savory, the 2006 Parable marries ripe plums with meaty elements as well as hints of coffee and vanilla. It’s round in the mouth and cuddly in texture, finishing with the softness of velvet. Drink it over the next five years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A warming, plush, velvety example of Barossa Shiraz, combining cedary oak with superripe, almost chocolaty fruit and brighter touches of red berries. It seems a bit closed on the nose at this stage; give it some time in the glass top open up. Best now–2015.

A top-notch effort, The Duke (a single-vineyard bottling) offers lovely cherry fruit, full body allied to a wonderfully silky texture and tremendous length. What’s not to like? Drink it over the next 3–4 years.
