Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dark, dense and very modern in style, with captivating aromas and obvious richness. At 14.5%, this is big, New World Pinot Noir. But its flavors of black cherry, raspberry and cola nut are elevated and brush up against world class. With a cool finish, steady acidity and tannins, and fine purity, Alazan ranks as one of South America’s few top-tier Pinot Noirs.

This wine carries the same citrus and tea aromas as the regular Alazan bottling, but in the mouth it’s heavier and leans toward overripe. Chewy, dark raspberry and cassis flavors lead to a sweet, chunky finish with licorice, pepper and a bit of heat. Very nice but the Alazan is better balanced.

Dark, muscular and very oaky, especially early on where it smells charred and bacony, with black fruit in the background. Airing unleashes chewy, roasted berry, plum, carob and herbal flavors, and throughout there is a strong oak element. Finishes big and thick, with toast and leafy, herbal Pinot Noir nuances.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Always at the top of the Chilean Pinot heap is this true, complex wine from Kingston Family. The nose features light raspberry, citrus, oceanic brine and toasty, creamy oak. The palate is lush and rolls across the tongue with ease; ripe fruit in the cherry zone along with cocoa and spice make for fine flavors. Finishes with purity, smooth tannins and herbal twinges.

Light in color but lively in its aromas of lettuce, half-sour pickle, fresh asparagus and passion fruit. The palate is zesty and jumpy, with lemon-lime flavors, passion fruit and a touch of minerality. And the finish is quite long for Sauvignon, a direct reflection of the wine’s heft and 14.5% alcohol.

Tobiano in 2005 is preferable to Kingston’s 2004 Bayo Oscuro Syrah. This wine has more lift, fruit and balance. The nose is lightly fruity and rubbery, while the palate issues snappy boysenberry and controlled herb notes. Not your average New World Syrah; it’ll make you think.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Common but clean aromas of tea and black cherry give this fuller-bodied Pinot a good start. The palate is semisoft and plump, with ripe, fat, black fruit flavors of plum and black tea. A meaty, round wine with good acidity and structure. Drink now through 2011.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dark purple in color, and very rich on the nose. There’s also balancing tart aromatics of rhubarb and bramble. Looks, smells and tastes like a New World/California style of Pinot Noir. It’s creamy and oaky in the mouth, but behind that there’s ripe, varietal flavors that grow on you as the wine airs out. Maybe too big and brawny for fans of elegant PNs, but plenty good if you like a full-bodied modern wine.

The bouquet deals a fine mix of citrus, melon, bell pepper and asparagus, yet it’s not vegetal. Shows weight and sweetness on the palate, thus it will offset Asian foods like magic. Interestingly, it’s fermented in stainless steel barrels, not tanks, and with natural yeasts. Imported by Daniel Johnnes Wines.

Hillside fruit yields a seductive wine with flowery aromas offset by black cherry. Settles on the meaty, earthy, brawny style, with vigorous bitter chocolate, caramel and vanilla flavors stemming from the new oak. The real deal in Chilean Pinot Noir.
