This is the Costco house brand, and the new Merlot comes through with exceptional flavors for the price. It’s lush and loaded with black cherry and mocha flavors. Tannins are ripe and smooth, the concentration is surprising, and there are no holes in this wine; it plays out smoothly with a very satisfying richness.

For under $10, this is a medium-bodied, slightly soft Sauvignon Blanc that’s a good introduction to Marlborough. Melon and fig notes show some herbal underpinnings, but this is an easygoing wine meant to be drunk, not contemplated.

Light in color without much aroma or Zinfandel character but plenty of American oak, this bottling made for CostCo by Renwood Winery, who even go as far as to use their Grandmere name, is definitely lower in price (Renwood’s Grandmere is $35), but clearly also lower in quality. Middle of the road and a tad green on the finish.

This is showing a bit of age, with honeyed overtones creeping in atop the peach and herb flavors, but also shows decent weight and a dry, mineral-tinged finish. Drink soon. Imported by Pelco Inc.

Sweet, fruity and oaky, this Chard has flavors of peaches, pineapples and smoky vanilla.

The wine starts soft, light and delicate, with some toast as well as creamy fruit. But that fruit goes fast, leaving a Champagne that has a high dosage, giving an aftertaste that is more sweet than fresh. This really should be better.

Too sweet in residual sugary flavors to earn a higher score, this Merlot shows jellied cherry and blackberry flavors. Those who like their red wines sweet will enjoy it.

A very fine value in a Cabernet that’s dry, balanced and shows real Napa character. With firm tannins, it shows delicious black currant, mocha and oak flavors. Easily as good as Cabs twice as expensive.

Sweet and candied, like a dessert pastry, with sugary flavors of currants, chocolate and anise. The structure is fine. Will appeal to red wine drinkers with a sweet tooth.
