Shows lots of well-ripened black currant, cherry and cedar flavors, with a pleasant complexing of sweet herbs and spices. Very similar in structure and taste to a good Napa or Sonoma Cabernet, and represents a real step forward for the region.

Dry, hard and lean, this is a steely, minerally wine with a real bite of acidity. Not showing much fruit, but it’s a brisk palate-cleanser.

Shows the pluses and minuses of this variety in California. The texture is light and silky and the wine is dry, with pleasant cherry flavor. Yet there’s a stubborn greenness, a minty, peppery quality that suggests unevenly ripened fruit.

Strong in fruit and powerful in oak, made in the popular California style. Impresses with pineapple jam, buttered popcorn and vanilla flavors, in a creamy texture. Needs greater complexity and nuance.

Not a bad price for this modest wine, which satisfies for its upfront citrus and fig flavors and bone dry finish. Really cleans out the old palate.

Rather tart and dry now, with a minty streak cutting through the black cherry, cola, anise and spice flavors. It’s an elegantly structured wine of finesse and delicacy, but could be fatter and rounder. Drink Now–2012.
