Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Kopke has a treasure house of old Colheita tawnys, and this rich, wood-spiced wine is a classic example. The vanilla and caramel from long wood aging are balanced superbly with acidity and dried fruits. It is nowhere near too concentrated, but it is certainly rich, its flavors long-lasting and intense.

Bottled in 2008, this extraordinary wine is still concentrated. It is also smooth, a velvet texture of richness bordering on opulence. The flavor of wood is there, but more important are the old-time fudge and toffee flavors, rounded with sweet sultanas and edged with acidity.

A well-balanced wine, with great fresh juicy red fruits dominating the spice from wood. Lively, ripe and ready to drink now, its soft tannins a gentle layer over the rich fruit and acidity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Arinto grape makes full-bodied white wines, sometimes just a touch creamy. This wine is typical, with rich flavors balanced with some apple skin acidity and tannins, but showing a wide open, creamy texture. There’s just a touch of wood.

The wood leaps out over the delicate, sweet fruit. The burnt character touched with caramel is fine, but less wood would definitely help.

A firm style of wine, from the oldest Port producer. With tannins and bitter almond and chocolate flavors, this is certainly on the drier side.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Although part of Barros, Kopke still operates relatively independently, and obviously can draw on good stocks of aged tawnys. This wine certainly tastes all of 20 years, with its richness and dryness finely in balance, and with lemon jelly and intense ripe fruits shining through.

A rich, smooth wine, full of sweet black berry fruits, soft, tarry and lightly perfumed. A velvet textured, easy wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Like a Sauvignon Blanc in its herbaceous character, this wine is all cut grass, damp hay and tight green fruits. That makes for an initial raw character, tempered by some hints of apricot. It seems to need a few more months to develop in the bottle.

Spice, fruit, soft structure, attractive acidity. An aromatically fresh wine, floral with light toast.
