Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Really good wine with blasting dark fruit, wintergreen, herbs and tobacco aromas. This blend of 66% Syrah with 17% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère is tight, tannic and serious; the mouth has roasted, savory black-fruit flavors along with tobacco, and the finish is smooth and chocolaty. Except for the slightest hint of green on the nose and midpalate, this is a winner.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
As in the past, this blend of 51% Syrah and 49% Cab is rock-solid, with tight, tough herbal-olive undertones supporting spicy dark fruit and road tar aromas. The palate has pepper, blackberry and roasted plum flavors, while chocolate and espresso notes gather on the finish. Just 400 cases made by talented winemaker Alvaro Espinoza.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Always a good blend, the ’05 Kuyen seizes on raspberry, cassis and oaky richness and brings everything together in a well-wrapped package. The palate is bright, focused and full of cherry and raspberry, while the finish is lengthy and stout. A flavorful and satisfying red wine with a robust personality.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Opens with an enticing package of cedar, tobacco, herb, leather and black-fruit aromas. The palate has live-wire acidity and overall the wine is bright, piercing and full, with herbal black cherry, cassis and cola flavors. The finish is a little quick and short on flavor but big on texture and tannins. Made from Syrah, Cab Sauvignon and Carmenère.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Spicy and dark, with deep aromas of plum and berry mixed with crude oil and red pepper flake. For sure this is a serious, well-crafted blend; the fruit is ripe and tasty, but there’s also enveloping oak touches and finely managed tannins. Covers the mouth in a blanket of texture and flavor. Imported by The Global Vineyard.

Kuyen Syrah-Cabernet - 2003

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Alvaro Espinoza, owner of this label, has thrown a lot of hot, spicy oak at this tannic heavyweight, and it may need a few years to show its true identity. For now, it’s dark and brooding, with black plum, blackberry and bitter chocolate flavors. Finishes rather hard and acidic, which time may tame. Needs food to match the vise-grip tannins. It’s 70% Syrah and 30% Cabernet.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Syrah and Cabernet are at the heart of this blend, which is perfumed and bold, with olive, crushed earth and minerally aromas. Subtle on the palate, with dense but narrow plum and herb flavors. Finishes herbal, with good clarity, earth and character. Just shy of excellent.
