An Italian variety, similar to Sauvignon Blanc. This is a strong, distinctive wine, with upfront lemon and grapefruit flavors. It has softer, buttery notes from oak and lees. It is not subtle but provides a direct hit of tart, clean flavor.

Pretty full-bodied, with blackberry and cherry flavors and a dry hit of acids and tannins, especially on the finish. Feels a little thick and heavy. Needs food, the richer the better. —S.H.

Rough and untamed, a dry, fruity wine with berry and tobacco flavors and country style tannins. Hits the palate with an aggressive texture and turns tart on the finish. —S.H.

Opens with a blast of white pepper, with underlying hints of blackberries. Fruity and dry, with a good dose of tannins. This is a food wine. It is not hedonistic on its own, with a tart, austere finish, but it is a very nice wine with the right foods. —S.H.

A tough, dry wine, with gritty tannins and pronounced acidity. Flavors veer toward blackberries, tobacco and herbs. Like a decent Chianti, it’s tart and austere but clean, a wine that tastes O.K. on its own but will improve with food. —S.H.
