Ripe and sweet nose with very pronounced tobacco and tea leaves on the nose, lots of very ripe fruit, smoke, earth, but also showing its age and some decay with the presence of notable volatile acidity; still very sweet and smooth in the mouth, if lacking the sharpness and the focus that was there when it was younger; still smooth and soft with elegant flavors and good balance; the finish begins to break down in the glass; needs to be drunk very soon. (14.5/20) Another bottle at Sotheby’s Haut Brion dinner was much better, with a sweeter nose showing chocolate, caramel, cassis and sweet fruit; much fresher in the mouth with ripe fruit and integrated tannins; rich flavors, nicely aged and focused. Another of the ‘82s that has been hiding behind a wall for several years, and now appears ready to emerge; powerful nose with big aromas of iodine, iron, sweet fruit, tobacco leaves, and cedar; sweet and rich in the mouth with the luscious flavors of the Graves; still dominated by earthen tannins that will need some additional time, but there is soft rich fruit here now to provide balance and a long finish that has a wonderful fresh lemony twist at the end. – Sweet and ripe nose, loaded with chocolate and cacao scents, loads of ripe fruit aromas, dense, round, with tar, earth, oriental spice, and salt water taffy to round out the nose; sweet and spicy in the front of the mouth, quickly succumbing, however, to dry powerful tannins and gripping acidity; this wine is still backward and not showing itself very much, although there is a deep structure with layers of flavors here that is waiting to emerge; try it again in four or five years when this will be a meaningful wine. (18 now but clearly heading higher)

Earthy, somewhat musty nose at the outset with sweet green herbs, chocolate, cacao, and tea; sweet and round in the mouth with rich fruit, quite ripe, powerful, spicy with soft tannins; quite a bit of fat in this wine, chewy, spicy and peppery with dry acidity at the end with a finish of cold coffee. Earthen and ripe nose, quite elegant, tobacco and cedar, cranberries, tea leaves; sweet and ripe in the mouth, fullish and quite rich, fruit compote flavors; big spicy fruit flavors; silky and smooth with hints of tobacco; the finish shows more assertive tannins and brings forth the flavors of quince and red fruits; quite good and seems to have matured nicely since my last tasting. Wonderful rich nose, loaded with plums and cassis, sweet aromas, touches of baked apple and coffee, earth; ripe and very smooth in the mouth, lots of sweetness here, almost too much in the front of the mouth, but then more character as it breathes in the glass; soft ripe tannins center the wine, and good citrus fruit acidity with quince and pomegranate flavors finish the picture; long finish, in this format, still quite young and precocious.
