Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Honey, dried apricot and Golden Delicious apple waft off the nose of this amber-colored dessert wine. As time goes on, those apple aromas turn to cider and that makes us doubt its aging capacity. It tastes tart, sweet and fresh on the close.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a very pretty Picolit with lively aromas of dried apricot, honeysuckle, freshly chopped nuts and lemon zest. The wine is thick but fresh in the mouth and would pair with desserts (spongecake or fruit tarts) and foie gras.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Here’s a pretty red wine from Northeast Italy with well-balanced aromas of black fruit, spice and smoke. The wine has an elegant, compact feel and offers extraordinary intensity in the mouth thanks to its well integrated tannins and acidity. Nice job.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a dark, smoky red wine with aromas of charcoal, ash and mineral backed by mature blackberry, plum and prune. The wine offers a meaty, dense consistency in the mouth with lingering layers of smoke and spice. The blend consists of Refosco, Tazzelenghe, Cabernet, Franc and Merlot.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s a soft, creamy quality to this Sauvignon (with 10% barrel-fermented Picolit added to the blend) that recalls aromas of peach, passion fruit and papaya. There’s excellent depth and density here and the wine is generous and chewy in the mouth. Pair this citrusy white with shellfish or pasta con vongole.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This wine opens with a pristine and pleasantly compact nose that is accented by delicate tones of peach, honey and yellow acacia flower. The wine is creamy and soft in the mouth with playfully sour notes of citrus and exotic fruit on the close.

One of the most fragrant, subtle Sauvignons you’ll encounter. The nose spreads out like a garden in spring, with honeysuckle supported by chalky minerality. The palate delivers lemon chiffon along with light tropical fruit, while the finish is creamy, long and flawless. Could have scored even higher, but one reviewer she said it lacked varietal character (could be the Picolit) and fell off on the back end. Imported by Domaine Select Wine Estates.

La Roncaia Sauvignon - 2002

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
La Roncaia’s Picolit exhibits a very distinctive style. The wine is thick and dark amber in color and has rich, almost brooding notes of toast, pine resin, molasses and burnt caramel. It’s definitely on the extracted, syrupy side and might pair better with Roquefort or aged cheese than it would with dessert.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The bouquet is fragrant, with notes of graham cracker, pepper, leather and coffee. Some dry, dark fruit that’s one part cassis and another part peppery (think Syrah) graces the firmly tannic palate. The finish is long, spicy and borderline hot. Has more weight than depth.
