Winery - La Sirena

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
One of the most distinctive aromatic dry white wines I’ve ever had from California. Brilliantly acidic and bone dry, with intense orange blossom, peach, floral and vanilla flavors. The pure transparency of the fruit has not been interfered with by oak.

This wine straddles the line between off-dry and overtly sweet. It has a pleasant flavor of orange marmalade, set off with crisp acidity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Nice nose on this wine, blending graham cracker, marshmallow and chocolate notes into a veritable smore-gasbord of aromas. Doesn’t quite have the same richness on the palate, however, and turns a bit tart on the finish.

La Sirena Syrah - 2002

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
More exciting than winemaker Heidi Barrett’s Santa Ynez bottling, this smooth, creamy-textured Syrah is packed with ripe plums and blackberries, yet manages to be complex at the same time, adding hints of pepper and dried spices. The long finish echoes with hints of ripe berries and cracked pepper.

Very distinctive, opening with pencil lead and cedar-cigar box aromas. Very fine and pure. Airing coaxes out the deep blackberry, red and black cherry and blueberry flavors. Finishes with a sweep of sweet fennel. Well-structured and delicious now, and should age beyond 2010.

La Sirena Cabernet Sauvignon - 2001

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This dramatically structured Cab needs time in the cellar. It straddles the old-fashioned style of long-aging and the modern style of immediate opulence. The tannins star, sticky and firm, but the wine, which contains minor amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, is so rich, so loaded in black currants, cherries, sweet ripe plums, chocolate, anise and smoky oak, that it seduces now. But best after the age of six.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
No questioning the ripeness of this Syrah. It floods the mouth with jammy cherries, blueberries, currants and chocolate, with a peppery edge accented by smoky new oak. A bit soft and obvious in its palate appeal, it’s at its best now and for a couple years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From Heidi Barrett’s estate vineyard in Calistoga, this Syrah is very rich and appealing. What it lacks in complex subtlety it makes up for in immediate chocolate-inspired blackberry jam and mushu plum flavors. Firmly tannic, it might age for a while, but will show best now through 2012.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Made in a soft, drink-me-now style despite some firm tannins, this Syrah is forward and gentle in blackberry, cherry, dark chocolate, peppery spice and new oak flavors. It’s dry, but rich in fruity, glyceriney extract.
