Another big nose with sweet and spicy aromas, lots of pepper, earth, smoke and sweet complex fruit and spices, but not as compelling as the ’62; sweet and smooth in the mouth; has the sweetness of the ’62 but not the depth or the grip; smooth and silky though with more of a seductive quality, but less of the thrust; long, smooth finish big earthen and sweet fruit flavors; a beautiful wine. (19/20) Served again at the XXVI Daniel dinner, but I thought the wine at that event was more advanced and tired; the nose, while sweet and rich also had more tobacco notes and a hint of violets and lilacs in the nose; the nose was better than the wine, which my notes reflect was a bit thin and dilute, and was losing its fruit at the finish. I would not rate the bottle I had at this event higher than a 16.5 or 17, even though Bill Zeckendorf did not agree with my assessment and thought I was too harsh.

I am fortunate to have had this wine each of several of the last years, and it never seems to disappoint; huge nose, evoking complex and deep aromas, smoked meat, iron, sour mash, pepper, dense and powerful; sweet and rich in the mouth with a restrained power that seems to chomp at the bit; big, razor-sharp acidity integrates well with dry, elegant tannins that provide a solid platform for the fruit to perform; fabulous sweetness permeates the finish in the mouth; very balanced and seemingly endless; a brooding presence of a wine that conjures up images of Hamlet on the ramparts. Wonderful nose, sweet and perfumed redolent of lilacs and linden blossoms, pepper, chocolate and caramel, deep and rich aromas but with underlying power; sweet and seductive in the mouth, ripe fruit, mostly black fruits mixed with sweet caramel, chocolate; expansive wine with intense fruit flavors that grow in the mouth; elegant finish; no disappointment here. Not a great year for Burgundy, but the problems are not reflected in this wine; the nose is quite loaded with deep black cherry and black fruit aromas, and the presence of smoke and earth, green herbs, stems, quite perfumed and aromatic; sweet but clumsy in the mouth at the first taste, losing more as it opens; earthen, somewhat flat and dry at the finish; lighter and more dilute than this wine is in the better years; still, all-in-all it shows its breeding. First nose is pure horseshit, funky and barnyardy to a fault, then more fruit and sweet aromas emerge, but the total effect is quite earthen and basic with lots of intensity but little pleasure; the flavors in the mouth are better; there is sweet fruit, particularly in the first taste, which has the classic black fruit and stemmy flavors that this wine produces; the balance is missing, though, as the amount of raw tannins overlays the weaker fruit, and produces a dry woody wine; it shows that in not very good years, even the greats do not produce great wine. Although very young, this wine already exhibits wonderful richness and poise; rich ripe fruits define the nose, black cherry, smoke, lots of black pepper, rich and dense but with character; sweet and earthen in the mouth; not as much of the stems apparent in this wine at this stage, and there is more forward sweet fruit; black cherries and plums; smoky; richly textured; dense yet defined; layered flavors become more acidic and sharper in the mouth as the wine sits in the glass; a very good wine although lacking in some of the more traditional elements of La Tâche at this stage of its life.
