Big and easy with caramel and creamy notes to spare, this has good apple, spice and toast elements and an appealing nutty-leesy aspect. Still, it seems already quite mature, like it needs to be drunk now. Enjoy it soon for its full mouthfeel and ripe baked apple flavors.

The wine is astringently tannic and offers little relief by way of flavor, but if you concentrate you’ll find a core of black cherry. Still, the structure is so fine that with a suitably rich dish, the wine would be better.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A bizarre style of wine. The aromas are Port-like—old Port—with a caramelized, candy-sugar note verging on pie crust. There’s also a streak of clove. In the mouth, it’s earthy and dense, with tomato flavors and a dash of sweetness from oak.

Very good Syrah, with tight, astringently young tannins courtesy of the region’s cool climate. Impressive for its balance, a big, rich, dry wine with ripe blackberry, coffee and white pepper flavors and an elegant, upscale mouthfeel. Drink now through 2010. Excellent value for the price.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pronounced, sharp cherry-berry aromas, generously enhanced by sweet, smoky oak. In the mouth, it’s full bodied, syrupy and dense, with jammy berry flavors and soft, lush tannins. Very much a Châteauneuf-style wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A little light in body and flavor, with dried Provençal herb flavors and a hint of cherry. Does a yeoman’s job of expressing basic Santa Rita Pinot Noir character at a price that’s about half that of the top bottlings.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s some barnyardy funk to this Pinot, the kind of mushroom scent some people call Burgundian. Fortunately, the flavors in midpalate turn to richer cherries, even a taste of cherry cheesecake. The Martin Ray Clone, which is actually a selection, not a clone, is old by California standards, and of uncertain origin, although suspected to have come from superior vineyards in Burgundy.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Good price for such a nice Chardonnay from the Santa Rita Hills. The wine is very dry and crisp in acidity, with a bracing mouthfeel that offers rich, oak-inspired flavors of pineapples, pears and green apples. Nice now with Ahi tuna tartare or grilled salmon.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tastes dry and sharp in acids, a young, tart wine not offering much pleasure now, despite good cherry, cola, red licorice and sandalwood flavors. Needs a little time, but not too much. Give it a year to calm down.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a big, ripe, full-bodied and oaky Pinot Noir. It’s too powerful to drink now, unless you don’t mind immaturity. The raspberry, cherry and blood orange flavors are of the pie-filling type, and the oak sticks out in smoky, vanilla sweetness. Give it 4–5 years in the cellar to come around.
