Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Chunky, fruity, lots of oak; yes, it’s the perfect bistro wine. Raspberry and vanilla aromas, some red licorice on the chewy palate, and then a snappy finish that hangs around for a while. It’s Cab Franc Napa-style, and for a youthful wine, it’s easy to drink but still offers enough nuance and character to satisfy the discerning wine drinker.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Shows the strengths and weaknesses of a straight Cab Franc. It’s pretty, polished and silky in cherry and oak-inspired flavors, but a little simple. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Shows the tannic dryness of an ageable Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, but the flavors are pure Cab Franc. Cherries, red currants and cherry liqueur star in a medium-bodied wine with the silkiness of Pinot Noir. Elegant and sophisticated. Drink now–2012.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A very rich, soft, complex wine, twice the size of L&R’s regular 07 Cab Franc. Just oozes sweet, ripe mashed cherry fruit flavors, sweetened with brown sugar and sprinkled with cinnamon, ground roasted pecans and vanilla. The name refers to the clone number. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Delicious and quirky, this wine has a cherried richness and the weight of a fine Chinon, but the silky gentleness of a light, pleasant Beaujolais. It’s really a likeable wine, and there’s nothing quite like it in California.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This designation is the winery’s reserve bottling. Winemaker John Skupny has the cellar in mind, to judge from the sandpapery tannins. Still, there’s a delicate lightness, a red cherried, cranberry flavor underneath that offers immediate appeal yet has the capacity to age for 10 years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Lang & Reed, one of the few Cab Franc specialists in Napa, has produced in this wine a delightful, even complex sipper. It’s much lighter in body than a Cab Sauvignon, with a richly herbal edge to the cherry flavors. Notable for its dryness, balance and harmony.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Where Lang & Reed’s ’03 Cab Franc is elegant and light-bodied, this is fuller and more complex, although it has nowhere near the weight of a Cabernet Sauvignon. The silky texture carries flavors of cherries, tobacco, sweet kid leather and thyme. Enjoy this dry, slightly tannic wine with grilled veal chops in a wine reduction sauce with mushrooms.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Light cherry and herb flavors are couched in moderate body. This is a light, textured wine for simple quaffing. Try it on the rocks or as an apéritif. Seafood and poultry would also make good matches.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Shows the dry, lightly elegant mouthfeel that a pure Cab Franc should have, with polished cherry and vanilla flavors. But it struggles to rise beyond country-style.
