Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Though it’s a 2000, it’s still bright, fresh and dry, with zippy, lemony overtones. The label says “cellared and bottled by”—as opposed to “produced and bottled by.” That’s usually code for bulk wine. But who cares? With its green apple, melon and grapefruit flavors, this wine is fun to drink. The finish is clean, but a little short.

A dry, fairly tannic wine that intrigues with an array of plums, herbs, coffee and tobacco. Don’t turn away because it’s not fruity. There’s some real complexity and elegance here.

Monterey is at the forefront of unoaked Chardonnay and this delightful bottling shows why. It’s dry, racy in acidity, and rich in mineral-inspired pineapples, limes and apples. Doesn’t need any oak to satisfy.
