Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A bit foxy and stemmy on the nose, with hints of orange that make things seem nervy and stretched. The palate is clumsy and a little tart in flavor, with herbs and zest leading to a wavy but unique finish. Walks to the beat of its own drummer; uncommon for Malbec.

Lively nectarine and citrus aromas give it early life, and the palate is equally zesty, with tangerine and pineapple flavors. This is good Sauvignon Blanc for Argentina, with plenty of citrus but not a lot of nuance or complexity.

Not exactly a world-class white wine but at least it smells and tastes like Chardonnay. The nose offers some butter and lemon curd, while the palate is jumpy and tastes like a mix of pear, apple and spice. A fresh, young wine that should be drunk soon.

Despite a touch of volatility and jumpiness, this is good Bonarda from San Juan Province. The nose is a bit narrow, but raspberry and floral notes seep in. The palate has some zing to it, but the cherry and raspberry flavors are forward and mostly pure. There isn’t much complexity or depth, but what’s here is good.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Black Label is a step up the quality ladder for Las Moras, based in San Juan. And this wine is full and chunky on the nose, with blackberry and plum-based aromas. In the mouth, it’s more racy and oaky, teetering on sharp. But the freshness it boasts bodes well for pairing with meat, and the aforementioned oak lends a hint of cappuccino to an otherwise snappy finish.

An Argentinean Tannat that strikes a lot of good chords. The nose is full of blackberry and prune, while the palate seems racy courtesy of core acidity that can’t be shaken. Good for those eager to expand their wine horizons. It’s both dark and jumpy.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Yet another solid but unspectacular Malbec from Las Moras. The nose is rubbery and meaty, with leather and barnyardy brett notes. The palate is chunky and fleshy, with blackberry, stem and tobacco flavors. Good structure; mediocre aromas and flavor components.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Cabernets here, if you hadn’t already guessed, are Sauvignon and Franc. There’s a distinct herbal element to the nose, creating a “green” aromatic sensation. Meanwhile, the palate is coarse and on the acidic side, with red-fruit flavors accented by tarragon and oregano. Spicy but hot on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Las Moras is from Argentina’s La Rioja region, and Black Label aims to be its top product. But mostly the wine pushes minty, dark oak on top of superficial plum and berry fruit. It’s extremely wooded, so the finish deals mint chip and raw wood flavors. A racy and sheer mouthfeel doesn’t exactly help it along.

Big and broad, with a touch of peanut and leather as well as feisty black-fruit aromas. This represents Finca Las Moras’ top effort in La Rioja. It’s 70% Malbec and 30% Bonarda, and the result is a forward blend with tantalizing berry flavors and a juicy, aggressive character. Very satisfying and fairly long on the finish.
