Simple and jammy, this Zin shows fruity flavors of raspberries, cherries and oranges. It’s a little sugary sweet.

A little soft and one-dimensional, but attracts for its wealth of flavor. Tastes like crushed cherries and blackberries, sprinkled with cocoa power, with notes of licorice and buttered cinnamon toast.

Lava Cap Merlot - 2004

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Starts promising, with delicate scents of herbs, cherries, menthol and a hint of citrus peel, but quickly accelerates into jammy, cooked raspberries and lashings of vanilla that turn inexplicably tart and aggressive on the finish. Perplexing.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pleasant in the glass, this small-production offering from Lava Cap is a decent introduction to their wines though it takes time for any aromas to develop and the finish tastes a little green.

Too soft and sweet, like melted raspberry jam. Feels tired and syrupy.

Lava Cap Barbera - 2007

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Look at that price! This is a dark wine, exciting to smell. The word “fiery” comes to mind. Something warm about it: baked cherry tart, blackberry pie fresh from the oven. In the mouth, huge, ripe and flattering. Floods the palate with sweet fruity, berry flavors, but bone dry. Tannins are a work of art, soft and intricate. Worth every penny, and one of the best Sierra wines in memory. The high alcohol level is not apparent.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Light in body, this Pinot has candy flavors of cherries, nougat, honey and roasted nuts. Tastes just like a protein bar you buy at the health food store.

Pale in color, with tart acidity and a slightly sweet finish, this Sangiovese has flavors of cherry tart with the crust, sprinkled with sugar, cinnamon and pepper. It has the silky texture of a Pinot Noir.

As softly sweet and delicious as cherry pie filling. Super-rich and spicy in cinnamon, nutmeg and white pepper, with a healthy dose of cocoa powder. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The hot climate in which the grapes were grown shows in this wine’s extreme softness and jammy ripeness. It’s almost sweet, like a cherry and raspberry pastry.
