A graceful, elegant, Pinot Noir, this seems almost austere at first, but interesting. Along with the delicate cranberry and cherry fruit are grace notes of graphite and pepper. All these Le Cadeau 2007 Pinots are stylish and refined, with alcohol in the low 13% range.

Le Cadeau consistently scores well with their evocative and textural Pinots. In this excellent vintage there are layers of earth and spice, sweet sassafras and brambly fruit. It just sits really well in the mouth, not a blockbuster, but complex and lingering, with the sort of creamy finish that invites the next glass immediately.

Nicely balanced, with a rich mix of tart, brambly berries, hard cherry candy, spicy herb and a vein of dark mineral. Everything is woven together in balance; the individual flavors stand out like threads in a tapestry, but give the wine texture and depth.

The Rocheux bottling comes from a vineyard parcel with especially rocky soil, and there is a heightened minerality along with a racy, well-defined edge to the wine that the French call “nerveux.” It’s a thrill to taste if you race along with it and if you like a more acidic style, with tart raspberry fruit as your companion. The finish brings in leaf and vanilla, all in context and perfectly balanced.

Each Le Cadeau wine has a different consulting winemaker, and some are down in Ukiah, hence the Oregon AVA, although this is estate-grown, Willamette Valley fruit. This new Côte Est (eastern slope) is still tight, very young and a bit withdrawn. There are earthy flavors around the spicy purple fruits; it’s balanced and fine, and seems to have a more delicate, feminine spin than the other new releases from Le Cadeau. Time will tell. Decant it or, even better, cellar it for about five years.

Full and rich, this seductive wine, crafted by Tony Rynders, has a little extra in terms of fruit, impact and finishing power. Ripe strawberry, cola, sweet hay, nougat and a penetrating midpalate that is concentrated but not jammy. The finish seems to gather strength, and resonates beautifully for several minutes after you swallow.

Le Cadeau’s Equinoxe Cuvée is the winery’s most limited offering, just 110 cases. Quite distinctive, it carries a high, piercing caraway note, but also offers rich, ripe, chunky cherry fruit and streaks of cola and caramel. It’s concentrated and chewy, a substantial wine with a soft, lengthy finish incorporating earth, leaf and pepper.

From the rocky west side of the estate vineyard, this wine, crafted by Harry Peterson-Nedry (of Chehalem) shows a distinctly mineral aspect, dappled with fresh cut herbs. The fruit shows up more in the mouth than the nose, tart and spicy, concentrated and focused.

Aromas of vanilla cream and cherries jump from the glass—like a sniff of Cherry Garcia ice cream. Pretty fruit, forward and immediately delicious, but the Diversité does not carry through in the finish quite as long as some of the other designates from Le Cadeau.

The Côte Est Pinot Noir is from a block on the cooler, east-facing side of the vineyard, and crafted by Steve Ryan. Tight, herbal, briary and nuanced with tobacco and earth, this has a solid core of fruit and remarkable persistence.
