Winery - Le Chiuse

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The wine is burdened by a tired, heavy quality and most probably suffers from mild oxidation. Our second bottle was fresher at the beginning, but any fruit tones start to fade fast in the glass. Initial pie crust, almond and baked cherry are nice while they last. Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons, Ltd.

Le Chiuse surprised us this year because this generally vibrant and lively Brunello seemed tired. With aromas of old leather, white mushroom, cedar, prunes and dried currants, it drinks well now but the jury is out on how long this wine can age. We’re betting not more than two or three years.

Dense and reduced, with cola and root beer aromas. This is not the liveliest Brunello going, which is proven by the modest tannins and equally moderate acids. Nonetheless, it’s not flabby or disproportionately flat. The flavors are good and the finish is long. But with a touch more zest it could be a high-flyer.

A well-received Brunello with characteristic notes of earth, blackberry, cherry, dried spice, cola and cedar wood. We appreciated the balance, length and dusty tannic finish. Try with stewed game meat. Imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons, Ltd.

Here’s an interesting Brunello that recalls moist notes of forest floor and white mushroom, backed by cherry and wild berry. The wine opens with dense concentration and a dark ruby color. It ends with a long, polished feel.

Spice and cherry aromas are pleasantly weaved together to form a cheerful and substantive wine. It’s a medium-bodied Rosso with bright cherry flavors that would pair well with pasta.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Gets going with hard, funky aromas resulting from either too much sulfur or heavily toasted barriques. The palate starts out leathery, although time reveals maple and additional sweetness. Flavorwise, we’re talking cranberry, cherry and plum. Peppery on the finish. Imported by Frederick Wildman and Sons, Ltd.

Organically grown Sangiovese Grosso is the base of this bright and buoyant Rosso di Montalcino. There are mineral and campfire notes that play a supporting role to black cherry, currant and cola. The mouthfeel is compact and informal.

This beautiful wine opens with impressive intensity and elegance. Aromas recall wild raspberry, cherry, cassis, cola and subtle spice shadings. Thanks to the silky nature of its tannins, you could pair this wine with lean meats like game hen or rabbit.

Le Chiuse has produced one of Montalcino’s brightest stars with this Riserva 2004 (the base 2004 Brunello didn’t impress us as nearly much). This is a delicious wine that you will enjoy on every level. The intensity and purity of the fruit and spice aromas are impressive and the mouthfeel is extra-plush and supple. Yet, those firm tannins give it the balance and structure it needs.
