There’s a raw, chewy quality to this simple Valpolicella that recalls black cherry and vinous grape. The wine proceeds with a mellow, soft feel and offers much more fruity intensity and personality in the mouth than it does on the nose.

Here’s an Amarone with raw notes of cherry and root beer backed by mesquite smoke, spice, leather and cigar box. It’s a very sweet, succulent wine with soft tannins and a long, chewy finish.

Soft spice tones come into focus with ripe berry flavors, cherry preserves, dried prunes and figs. The wine also offers generous aromas of maple syrup, Spanish cedar and pipe tobacco, with lingering tones of root beer and cola. Pair this Valpolicella with honey-roasted ham and cloves. —M.L.
