Not a good nose here, green and musty, clearly some damage to this bottle, there are aromas of deep rich fruits underneath the superficial damage; the wine did not recover in the mouth and retained a medicinal and chemical flavor that could not be suppressed by what I suspect is a good amount of ripe fruit flavors underneath; it’s a shame as I suspect that like many of the 1983 Pomerols, this would have been a wonderful wine. Powerful nose, huge and perfumed aromas of chocolate, roasted coffee, black fruits, tar, salt marsh, deep and brooding nose that is quite cerebral; sweet and round in the mouth, deep peppery flavors that show licorice, quince, cranberry and cedar flavors; long finish in this wine with deep flavors and a wonderful, silky texture at the end that caresses the palate as it fades into memory. Dark and sweet aromas, hefty and burly with a roasted quality to the nose; this wine is closed and austere at this time, showing little but big dry tannins that control the flavors, woody and dry in the mouth with a saliva-sucking quality that makes you sit up; there does seem to be a layer of fruit just below the surface that might break out in the next few years, but this is tough to enjoy now; given the questions raised about this vintage, one wonders how much more this wine will show in the future; my score for present drinking is not high, though. For a young wine this is very approachable now; soft and seductive aromas, exotic oriental spice box scents of frangipani and mixed sweet herbs, very sweet aromas at this stage with an air of pastry about them; spicy and sweet in the mouth with great extract; very expressive for a wine this young; intense and deeply layered with cassis and cranberry flavors; long finish; given its age, this has to be a powerful statement of the future of this wine. This is an amazing wine right from the first nose; complex and hard to describe, the nose is loaded with a myriad of sense-stimulating aromas, sweet and buttery on the one hand, but also very floral and perfumed, rich and exotic with ripe black fruit aromas; sweet, rich and intense in the mouth with an unusual buttery undertone; very complex and deep; lots of describe here; caramel and toffee, raisins and plums; dry tannins with a touch of bitter almond; cranberry and crabapple; big finish, plumbing the depths of the palate with a complex of flavors and textures; but at the same time smooth and most pleasant; an amazing wine.
