Here’s an austere Amarone with overripe notes of fruit preserve, blackberry jelly, moist tobacco, leather, spice and root beer. The wine backs dense concentration with amazing intensity of aromas. It’s sweet and sour at the same time with firm tannins.

Some clove and cardamom notes add character to the toasty, barrel-driven nose. In the mouth, rich black cherry and blackberry flavors seem as though they were infused with some brandy or Port. The finish is all fruit, so much so that one reviewer called the wine a fruit ball that departs from tradition. Still it’s ripe, healthy and should age for quite some time.

Snappy and zesty from the very start, something we describe as “elegant.” This wine has some of the requisite richness and prune character of a good Amarone, but it leans more to red fruit, freshness and pop than heaviness. A sure thing with food, something many can’t offer.

Here’s a broad wine with a horizontal aromatic delivery and intense aromas of exotic spice, cola, mature cherry fruit and smoked bacon fat. This is a big, expressive Ripasso with chewy fruit flavors, bright acidity and sour cherry notes on the close. —M.L.

Black fruit, ash, cola, cherry, mesquite and spice open the nose of the soft, sweet and opulent Ripasso. This wine shows harmony, richness and elegance and would pair with hickory smoked ham. —M.L.

Le Ragose makes Classico and non-Classico Amarone. This is the non-Classico version with notes of toast, vanilla and raspberry fruit roll-up. It also shows nice aged qualities such as dark mineral, tar, resin and dried prune, making it ready to drink immediately. It has great length on the finish, firm tannins and bright acidity.

The vineyards of Le Ragose are located on beautiful hillside terrain at good altitudes and are rigorously planted in the traditional pergola system. Compared to the non-Classico version, this wine seems more youthful with sweet cherry flavors, wild apple and vanilla backed by good acidity and a spice-driven finish which means it has a bright future ahead even if you age it five to 10 more years.

Simple but attractive aromas of bacon, tree bark and red fruit get it off to a fine start. The second act is a palate of cherry, vanilla and chocolate. The finish is long, creamy and ultimately satisfying. This might be standard, but it’s a great take on standard. Best Buy.
