Giant and grapey, just as you might expect. It’s 100% forward, with plenty of overt cherry, coffee and chocolate character, but it’s also limited in scope and lacks complexity. A good food wine that’s not overblown with oak, even though it spent two years in barrels.

Excellent. Flavors and aromas are taut and lifted: Raspberry and black cherry, mainly, wrapped around a core of iron ore and charred meats. Tightly wound, powerful and delicious. 4,000 cases produced. Imported by Pacific Wine Partners.

This wine earns every penny of its modest price tag with a bright palate of petrol, talcum powder and wet stones propping up aromas of white flowers, cumin and lime. The finish could be longer but with this stunning nose and palate, we’re not complaining. Drink now.

What a combination—quality on par with some of Australia’s top performers at a price point that doesn’t put you on the bread line. Lively, with brisk acidity, the Bin 7 has lime, grass and mineral notes and just enough viscosity to remind you that it’s Riesling, not Sauvignon Blanc. Finishes long and fresh, with sour apple flavors. Editors’ Choice.

Though the wine wasn’t aged within sight of a barrel, the warm vintage lends it vanilla-cream aromas and flavors. Granny Smith apple makes up the rest of the flavor profile. Has lively acids and a hint of spritz on the finish.

Not a burly wine, despite its components. There’s juicy red fruit on the palate, though it’s taut; cola, mocha, root beer and big red fruit echo on nose and finish. Only 12% Malbec; only small amounts are exported to the U.S.

A current release, despite the vintage; these parcels were selected from some set aside for the Classic Clare bottling. Smells just great, with deep, penetrating menthol and dark plum fruit. Sorghum and licorice palate flavors are subtle on the palate and fatten up for a grand finale on the finish.

A new release, despite the vintage, but not available in the U.S. Another Leasingham with a deep, penetrating nose-here, it’s eucalyptus and black pepper. There’s big berry and plum fruit on the front palate, and tobacco and oak on the back. Soft and lush, drinkable now. Quite good.

Made in the methode champenoise style, of the same grapes that go into Classic Clare. Smells like Shiraz (which isn’t always true of sparkling Shiraz), with full red plums that reappear on the palate. It's soft in the mouth, with fine mousse and bouncy red fruit. Finishes with steely-mineral drynesss. Winemaker Kerri Thompson suggests that you drink it like the Aussies do, as an apéritif before the Thanksgiving turkey.

A museum release that won’t be on the market, probably, until late 2004, but is worth the wait. It’s elegant, with subdued slate, citrus and bread flour notes; however nice the flavors, the finessed mouthfeel is even more impressive. Juicy lime and crisp acids show through on the finish.
