This Riesling is a beautiful rose-copper color. Fresh flavors of white stone fruit and straw on the palate, with more of the same, plus some custard or cream, on the nose. It's medium-bodied and is more elegant than it is zippy or fresh. Finishes clean, with hay and peach.

Leeuwin Estate hits the spot with its 2006 Siblings Shiraz, tailored for immediate consumption. It delivers bold aromas and flavors of cracked peppercorns and black cherries in a medium-bodied format framed by supple tannins that turn slightly dusty on the finish. Drink it over the next few years.

Capturing the cut grass aromas of Sauvignon Blanc and the weightier mouthfeel of Semillon makes for a nice overall package. The palate is fairly intense, with kiwi, passionfruit and grapefruit notes that finish just a tad short.

Prominent vanilla notes envelop ripe plum and mixed berry notes on the nose, giving way to raspberry flavors on the palate. Tannins are muted but crisp acidity gives a lift to the slightly dusty finish. It’s an easy-to-drink, uncomplicated Shiraz meant for near-term consumption.

Leeuwin Estate’s reputation for Chardonnay is based on their Art Series, but the Prelude Vineyards bottling can offer decent value. Less so for the 2006, which seems tight and citrusy, lacking the bold opulence that marks the best Leeuwin Chardonnays. It’s a solid wine, imbued with pleasant tree-fruit flavors and balanced acids, finishing crisp.

Dark and taut, this is layered with lots of herbs, cedar and smoke backed by blackberry and cherry fruit. The racy palate is framed by branchy tannins and cassis flavors that linger on the medium finish.

This looks to be a top vintage for one of Australia’s most renowned Chardonnays. Like always, it’s big, bold and intense, with melon and pineapple fruit accented by toasted grain and slightly coconutty oak. Right now, it’s a little disjointed, showing a bit of unintegrated oak, but it should come together nicely in a year or two and last up to 10.
