Tavel is one of France’s best-known rosés, and the local co-op (Les Vignerons de Tavel) accounts for approximately 45 percent of the appellation’s production. Thankfully, at least from the 2005 vintage, quality is high and prices reasonable. There are several cuvées bottled and marketed in the U.S., but one of my favorite 2005s was Les Lauzeraie, which boasts lots of mineral and crushed stone aromas. It’s quite fruit-driven and rich on the palate, full of cherries and watermelon, while the silky texture gives ita slight edge over some of the other cuvées.

Has a Mourvèdre-ish quality to its aromas, sort of like tree bark and briary fruit with a touch of muscularity. Blackberry, plum and mushroom flavors stand out as being different from the rest of the Tavel crowd, but not necessarily better or worse.

Starts with modest, slightly glue-like aromas then adds a rich, weighty mouthfeel and delicate flavors suggestive of coconut. A bit low in acidity, this is a broad, mouthfilling white that could ably partner a variety of chicken dishes.

At the bottom end of the Tavel co-op’s hierarchy, this white Côtes-du-Rhône is neutral and bland but still shows adequate weight and clean winemaking.

This cuvée from the Tavel co-op is probably at its peak, offering dried fruit and spice along with a velvety texture. Rich dried-cherry flavors finish long and supple.

Starts with scents of spice and leather, but in the mouth the concentrated dark fruit comes through, powering its way with black cherries and plums while picking up a hint of licorice on the supple finish. Drink now.

Slightly darker than most Tavel, this cuvée from the co-op is more mineral and less fruited, yet also more alcoholic and bigger than the others. The result is a bit clunkier and not as harmonious, but still a good drink.

From its potent strawberry and watermelon nose to its candied fruit flavors, everything about this wine tries a little too hard, like a strident voice that says pay attention to me. It’s well made, tasty, and some will like the volume turned up.

Despite the slightly dark rosé color, this is a more mineral rendition of Tavel, with crushed stone and lime aromas. Yet it’s also nicely rounded in the midpalate and long on the finish. The Tavel co-op wines showed consistently well in my tasting of the 2005s.
