A big wine, but with many complex aromas, of vanilla, of black plums, of tar and violets. The flavors are equally varied, showing concentration and tannins, as well as new wood.

With aromas of smoky wood and perfumes, this is a sophisticated wine, polished and smooth. Raspberry flavors mingle with wood and the final effect is of elegance, but just missing the depth and complexity.

Les Vins de Vienne is a négociant business jointly owned by Gaillard, Villard and Cuilleron. This Saint-Joseph is smooth and well rounded, with no rough edges. Pepper, cedar and plum aromas and flavors are balanced and flavorful, finishing easy. Drink now.

Smoky, yet also floral and perfumed on the nose, marrying cherry blossoms and rose petals. Not terribly rich, but very pretty, with fine texture and balance. Shows great delicacy and finesse for a Crozes-Hermitage, and finishes long. Drink now.

Rather rich and intense for a Saint-Péray, marrying honeyed orange flavors with dry, minerally notes. Nice perfume, nice mouthfeel, nice flavors—the complete package. Drink now.

A wonderful mélange of honey, orange, apricot and spice; there’s a lot of complexity to this wine, all carried by a plump, mouthcoating texture and ample freshness. Delicious now, so why hold it any longer?

Rich blackberry aromas and flavors are marked by hints of vanilla and toast. It’s supple for Cornas, yet still features a chewiness to its tannins that suggest a few years of aging would by helpful. Drink 2009–2015.

Like many of the northern Rhône wines I tried from 2004, this has a wonderfully perfumed bouquet, with crisply defined scents of violets, raspberries and pepper. It just needs a little more substance and richness on the palate. Drink over the next few years.
