A flamboyant bouquet of pineapple, ripe orange, floral, nuts and toasty oak opens to a full palate of orange, nectarine and pineapple flavors. Interesting accents including brown sugar, buttered popcorn and mineral notes provide great tension against the fruit. Round and full—if a touch soft—it closes with a long, refined spicy-nutty finish.

In the lush, richly textured and oaky style that seems to becoming typical of Napa Syrah, this wine stands out as an exemplar of the type. Vanilla-infused berries finish long, with a hint of alcohol and a touch of coconut. A touch lacking in typical Syrah-like complexity, but an excellent wine.

Complex aromas of cassis, dough, espresso, bacon, and cola create instant interest. It seduces with its rich dark fruit and earth flavors, and a concentrated, suave mouthfeel. Big flavors and tannins don’t quit on the long, even finish. Profoundly enjoyable, seamless and shows impeccable balance. Keep for five to seven years; it will last a long time.

Yum’s the word for the Lewis, another feather in winemaker Paul Hobbs’s cap. It’s so complex from beginning to end that reviewers had difficulty recording the numerous flavors and aromas that we found. Here’s a sampling: We read the mouth as having a combination of prune, plum, smoked meat, toasted coconut, caramelized onion and vanilla aromas; the palate offers plum, cream, dried spices (cinnamon and nutmeg, mostly) and nutty-earthy notes. "Long, long" finish is chock-full of red berries, black pepper, peanut shells and a smidge of powdered sugar. "Wow!" wrote one reviewer. Um, yes. Agreed.
