Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Wet, salinic, oceanic and appley on the nose, with snappy, crisp, almost tart flavors of apple and citrus. A pure wine with juicy acids and a monotone finish that sports lemon and green apple. Powerful, pure, acidic and zesty for Chilean Chardonnay.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Other than a slightly burnt and stemmy nose, this is a nice Chilean Pinot. The bouquet deals tea, raspberry and crushed leaves, but as stated, also some burned rhubarb. Feels slightly syrupy and thick, with baked, herbal flavors of raspberry and strawberry. Falls off on the finish, where a bit of green enters the picture.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Definitely an elevated New World-style Chardonnay with baked apple, peach and toast aromas. The palate is richly textured, with lemony flavors that suggest orange, green melon and apple. A fresh and classy wine with well-applied oak and good overall balance.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A bit rough at first, with aromas of burnt field, corn and haystack. It gets fruitier with time, and the palate is smooth despite offering a lot of citrus and pineapple flavors. Finishes both lively and a touch creamy, with tang and vitality.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Now under the San Pedro umbrella, the Leyda winery brings out a Chablis-style Chardonnay with a lot of fruit, mineral and zest but not much culture or polish. Lemon, pineapple and stony flavors are angular, and there isn’t much relief on the finish. It’s all about lean, coastal fruit.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Passion fruit, pickle brine and other marine-influenced aromas work the nose on this cool-climate, value-priced SB. The palate is both sweet and sour, with tangy lemon as the lead flavor and softer citrus coming on later. Basic in composition; easy to drink.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Leyda is known for wines of character; the problem is that sometimes the character isn’t very appealing. This is a case in point; the wine has a lot of pickle, canned pea and other vegetal traits, with a flat feel.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tea, raspberry and tree bark aromas are interesting and inviting, while the strawberry and cherry flavors are a little gritty and reduced but true to the blueprint in terms of taste. On the finish, chocolate, vanilla and other oak-based flavors do their thing. Not a perfect New World Pinot but it’s on the right path.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A floral specimen with buttercup, apple, pear and pie crust on the nose. But in the mouth the wine is juicy and monotone, with apple and orange flavors that are tangy, thin and racy. This wine moves fast but doesn’t impress like a top Chardonnay should.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Pickled and funky, this wine seems to be at the end of its road. The nose has a bit of burnt hay, while the mouth is still juicy but also rustic, green and herbal. For whatever reason, this doesn’t have much freshness or purity of flavor.
