This is a Cab with high aspirations. It’s ripe in black currant flavors, with a rich layer of oak, and rich, sweet tannins. It can’t quite overcome a certain rusticity, but you have to admire the effort.

Dry and full-bodied, with a brambly, wild forest personaility that shows cherry and pepper flavors and a robust mouthfeel. So rich in fruit, it asks for foods equally powerful.

It’s hot up there in Redwood Valley, and this wine, even from a coolish vintage, is soft and cooked in fruit, although fortunately it’s fully dry. It has stewed cherry and blackberry flavors, with a touch of raisins.

A little one-dimensional and on the soft side, but enormously rich in apple butter, pineapple custard, apricot jam, gingerbread, vanilla honey and sweet oak flavors.

Smells unusual for a Cab, with cheese, sandalwood, molasses, orange peel and other aromas suggesting overly ripe grapes. In the mouth, turns quite tannic.

A very sweet wine, rich in vanilla and spice, with long, deep flavors of apricot jam, peach pie, and a finish of white chocolate-infused coffee. It’s a delicious dessert wine.

A complex red wine that drinks softly fruity and dry, and with quite a bit of style and elegance. The most notable feature is the texture. It’s velvety and round, and characterized by soft, dusty tannins. In this environment, fruit and berry flavors can shine. It’s made in the international style: Soft, ripely sweet, extracted and fruity, and well-oaked. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet and Petite Sirah. —S.H.

They have a lot of old-vine “minor” varietals left in Mendocino, and this wine comes from some of them. It’s probably as good as a Carignane can be, rustically tannic and earthy, bone dry, with piercing acidity and peppery-berry flavors. It’s an honest California vin de pays. —S.H.

From this warm, interior Mendocino appellation comes this slightly cooked Merlot. It has stewed cherry and blackberry flavors, but is dry and clean, with oak and herb complexities.

This Zin wine is so ripe, the fruit tastes cooked, like the goo that oozes out from an oven-baked cherry or raspberry pie. There are also chocolate fudge notes, with a cassis finish. It’s pretty exotic, but dry.
