This complements the winery’s “Rosso” and “Red” blends; it’s the Bordeaux blend in the trio. The color is a bit murky, and the flavors, though pleasant enough, have a certain murkiness also, mixing earth, toast, hazelnut, some indistinct red fruits and a finishing lick of raspberry preserves. It’s a good, all-purpose quaffing wine, but doesn’t quite conjure up Bordeaux.

100% varietal, this is impressively deep in color, yet trips lightly across the palate. It tastes of pretty strawberries, with hints of creamy chocolate.

Lone Canary does a Red, a Rosso and this Rouge, a classic Bordeaux blend of two Cabs and Merlot. Winemaker Mike Scott shows his European leanings, keeping alcohol levels in check (13.5%) and emphasizing balance and nuance over sheer power. The wine displays some of the herbal nuances and delicate oak influences lost in jammier efforts, but pushes through a long, intriguing finish.

This is 100% Barbera, from the Milbrandt Northridge vineyard in the Wahluke Slope. Tight, tart, acidic and vanilla-streaked, it seems at once unripe and over-ripe. Barbera in Washington remains a bit of an experiment.

A blend of Cab, Merlot and Syrah, this forward, tasty effort charms with cherries and grapes, then surprises with a solid center core of plump cassis and raspberries, gently leading into a fruit-driven finish. A lot of bang for the buck.

Lone Canary’s Rosso is a nod to the super Tuscan style. Sangiovese dominates the blend, bringing tart cherry and plum flavors to the front. Lean and tangy, it’s nicely balanced with some interesting flavors: nutmeg, vanilla bean and a hint of leather.

This is dark and slightly murky, with sweet scents of cooked fruits and baking spices. Somehow it keeps the alcohol levels well down (13%) but the fruit flavors are ultra-ripe, pruney, and deep. There is a good long finish that delves into soy, earth, baking chocolate, vanilla and clove, and is undeniably fascinating. This is not a wine that will ring everyone’s bell, but it offers a lot of flavor.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is 78% Sangiovese; the rest a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Delicious, round, warm, soft and nicely touched with leafy, herbal, tobacco-flavored fruit. Unlike most domestic Sangiovese, this very much recalls the soft, leafy flavors of Chianti. The finish has just a bit more heat and tannin, but compensates with distinctly varietal flavors.

Scents of prune, coffee and smoke lead into a chewy wine with substantial concentration. The cherry fruit has a syrupy character, and it’s finished with dark layers of coffee, licorice and char.

All stainless fermented, this spiky, pungently grassy Sauvignon Blanc unabashedly showcases the grape’s Loire-Valley origins, rather than hiding behind a curtain of sugar and oak. A whiff of diesel comes into play also, contributing to the complexity. It’s concentrated and packed with fleshy fruit ranging from pears to peaches to papaya; a really nice combination of ripe fruit and strong herbal elements.
