Fairly sweet and medicinal on the nose, almost like a vapor rub for sore muscles. Chunky and borderline syrupy on the palate, with run-of-the-mill plum and berry flavors. Finishes with texture and lemony tinges. Good but standard. Imported by Classical Wines.

A barrel-fermented wine with soft, lactic aromas that conjure memories of a bowl of cornflakes. The palate is dry but rather tasteless except for some distant melon and citrus. Finishes bland.

Persistently murky and leafy on the nose, this traditional-style Rioja brings juicier, brighter fruit to the palate along with some tangy, somewhat sharp acids. In the folds, a dash of oak brings vanilla and additional tannin into the picture. Improves with airing.

Typically dry and leathery, with only modest red-fruit aromas. It’s light to medium in weight, with punchy acidity pushing clean but thin cherry and plum fruit. Not too big or spacious on the finish, but good in a mainstream, traditional sort of way.

From Bodegas Bretón, this medium-weight red is a touch stewy, with peanut and black-olive aromas along with red licorice and Tootsie Roll. The palate offers strawberry and red cherry, while the finish is surprisingly tangy, with a shock of overt acidity.

Lean yet still fresh, with punchy herbal aromas of tree bark, dried fruits and burnt grass. A bit stripped of its power by now, but still tossing up strawberry and cherry flavors in front of snappy finishing notes of nectarine and pie cherry. An old-style wine with more acidity than flesh. Imported by Classical Wines.

Early leather and animal aromas soon yield to brighter fruit scents, and that’s followed up by a palate detailed by cherry and plum flavors. This nice, comfortable wine offers freshness and texture; it’s a very good crianza that nails the relationship between fruit and oak.
