Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Thick and dense in the mouth, with candied flavors of chocolate-covered cherries and new oak, this is a delicious wine that could be a little drier and more structured. The acidity is low, making the wine feel soft and melted.

Keefer has not been Loring’s most successful bottling. The ’06 is pleasant, and in its own way delicious, with upfront raspberry, cherry, cola and smoky vanilla flavors balanced with crisp acidity. But it has a candied one-dimensionality, and doesn’t seem likely to age.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Of Loring’s dozen single-vineyard Pinots released this season, this is one of the softest, sweetest and simplest. It’s pretty good, with polished cherry pie filling, cola, carob, licorice and spice flavors. But it could have a firmer structure.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Rich, ripe and spicy, this single-vineyard Pinot shows pie-filling fruit flavors of cherries, black raspberries and red currants. It’s a lusty wine that could use a little more complexity and layers of interest.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There is, as usual with Pinots from Garys’, a lusty, almost overwhelming quality to the wine. It’s a full frontal assault of flavor, with cascades of cherries, raspberries, cola, licorice, sweet leather and smoky char that go on and on. It’s an achievement, but what the wine has in directness, it’s missing in subtlety. Drink this big, bold California Pinot Noir now, or hold through 2010.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a very dry, elegant Pinot Noir that’s sleeker and earthier than many other comparably priced Pinots out there. It has what you might call a Burgundian profile, with the cherry, raspberry, cola and spice fruit balanced by truffles, leather and a suggestion of dried pine needles.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
So syrupy sweet and delicious, you almost want to pour this over a cup of vanilla ice cream. It’s fabulously rich in cherry compote and milk chocolate, yet dry and backed up by crisp acids. Defines the extreme of a ripe, extracted, somewhat heavy Pinot Noir style, but there’s no denying how good it tastes.

As full-bodied and heavy as a Grenache from the Central Valley. Shows very ripe cherry, red currant, licorice and spice flavors that are delicious, but lacks the tannin-acid balance for structural liveliness.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Shows good, rich flavors of currants, cherry and blackberry pie filling, cola, mocha and spices. But the mouthfeel is heavy, and the wine is a touch overripe. Now through 2010.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is the first wine made from Oregon grapes by this southern California winery. But one can’t help but wonder if shipping fruit all the way down the coast might bang it up a bit. For whatever reason, this wine tastes fractured, metallic and chalky. There is a core of black cherry, but it seems surrounded by gun-metal flavors, which stick to the palate and abruptly shut down the finish.
