Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Strongly flavored with smoky, charred oak, the smoke, coffee and espresso flavors ride roughshod over the pretty raspberry and red currant fruit. The poor fruit is overwhelmed; the winemaking seems better suited to bigger, riper, richer fruit.

What a score! This is sexy semillon, kissed with honey and flowers, and supple with a round core of delicious, intriguing, complex fruits. Pear, apple, blood orange and more are wrapped in a thoroughly delicious, well-rounded mid-palate, and the wine extends itself effortlessly into a lingering, delicious finish. Light enough to be food friendly, yet complex and wonderfully concentrated.

A tiny winery in the backwater burg of Mazama, Lost River is making some of the best, affordable boutique wines in Washington. Don’t look for a fancy label, but get a load of the fruit and style in the bottle. This is an elegant merlot showcase, a perfectly shaped expression of supple berry and cherry flavor, tart, vivid and racy. Lean, not mean; it’s a classic.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Good fruit to start, with solid black cherry and berry notes well-matched to the new oak. But it seems to hit a wall mid-palate and fall off; perhaps it’s just a bit of bottle shock. Score could improve with more time in bottle.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Reversing the often-seen Washington penchant for tossing Syrah into the Cab, this does the opposite, with 10% Cabernet in the blend. It’s showing plenty of ripe red berries and cherries, along with smoked meat and bacon fat. The finish is clean but does not lead into any new directions.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A Right Bank Bordeaux-style blend, 45% Cabernet Franc and 55% Merlot. The fruit is marginally ripe but thin, and there is a watery character to the midpalate. Flavors of tart berries are set against lemony acids; tannins are insubstantial and the wine feels a bit weightless in the finish.

Cool fermented in stainless steel and whole cluster pressed, this lively take on Pinot Gris offers rich pear fruit flavors, succulent and fresh. It’s a big, ripe, solid effort, with a lovely juicy quality that fills the mouth with a burst of just-picked flavor.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Wallula vineyard, set high atop a bluff overlooking the Columbia river, gives grapes that bring dark, roasted flavors to the large-scale wine. The fruit tastes as if it has been pushed, perhaps a bit too far, and the impression it leaves tilts toward the raisiny side. It’s a wine that could go in a positive direction with cellar time, but it is impossible to tell right now, as it cuts off quickly once in the mouth.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
In keeping with the winery’s other red wine releases, the Cedarosa matches tart berry fruits to lush barrel flavors of butter and toast. It’s approachable and somewhat monolithic.

Lost River Bordeaux-style Red Blend - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The blend is 60/40 Sauvignon Blanc/Sémillon, finished bone dry with a subtle hint of toasty cracker. If it were put up against other Bordeaux blanc-style offerings it would fare quite well at this price; the winemaking is subtle and sound, the flavors tightly wound and the fruit ripe enough but not too ripe. Citrus, melon and pineapple are here, racy acids and that nice kiss of oak.
