Winery - Lowden Hills

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The cluttered label, featuring a dog, seems out of character with the reserve designation and hefty price. It’s a Cabernet with small amounts of Merlot, Franc and Syrah; and it has spent more time in oak than the winery’s other Cabs. Hence, more extract, more tannin, more chocolaty flavor, all of which pushes it into an overdone, somewhat rough and scrapey style.

Pure Syrah from the great Boushey Vineyard. The fruit has a young vine character; bright and tangy, with added layers of coffee and peppery toast.

This is the estate vineyard, located in the flat, dry western end of the Walla Walla Valley. It’s 95% Merlot with a splash of Syrah and Cab Franc, and it is dark, tannic and straightforward. What’s missing is the extra detail and complexity that would add interest to the roasty-toasty tannins.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Thin, vegetal, lightweight and fairly generic Cabernet Sauvignon, with about 3% Syrah blended in. This has some of the pruney character of other Lowden Hills reds, along with earth and coffee grounds in the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Varietal and showing some of the typical gamy, earthy flavors of Boushey vineyard Syrah, this is a forward, aromatic wine with interesting scents of leather, compost and pepper. Green tea flavors fill in where the very tart, acidic red berry fruit fades out.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A super Tuscan blend, half Sangiovese, the other half split between Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. It’s quite a success; bright and spicy, the fruit flavors crisply defined, mixing raspberry, blackberry and cherry. Clean and deep, with polished tannins, and just a hint of heat in the finish.

From an Oregon vineyard, this also contains a splash of Syrah and Cab Franc in the blend. Spicy and soft, this wine could best be described as pretty. Its light fruit flavors suggest mulberry and strawberry preserves; the alcohol is a modest 13.8%.

This is a good representation of Pepper Bridge fruit, with a satiny, polished mouthfeel and broad, forward flavors. It’s been aged in one quarter new American oak, three quarters used French. Here the flavors of coffee and clove add an extra dimension.
