Shows classic flavors of spices, flowers, citrus, peaches and apricots, and like the label says, it’s dry. But the wine feels too soft and simple.

It’s always nice to come across a good California Riesling, because there are so few of them. This one’s made from organic grapes grown in gravelly benchlands, and its cool-climate origins show in the brisk acidity that makes the yellow apricot, wildflower and slate flavors so clean. Production was a miserly 448 cases, and the alcohol level is a refreshingly low 13%.

A little too soft and sweet to earn a higher score, but if jammy Rieslings appeal to you, it’s a good buy. Shows flavors of apricots, pineapples, wildflowers and spice, balanced with very crisp acidity.

From a vineyard called Sweetwater, this Riesling itself is sweet in peach, pineapple and wildflower honey flavors. Brisk Monterey acidity balances, with a tart, prickly mouthfeel.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A really nice wine, especially if you’re looking for something from California that’s bone dry and modest in alcohol. Sleek with mouth-cleansing acidity, it shows intricate flavors of apricots, green apples and grapefruits.

Dornfelder is a red grape variety grown in Germany. This blend is very much like a cool climate Pinot Noir. It’s soft and light in texture and low in alcohol, with complex cherry, leather, tobacco and spice flavors. Drink it now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Brisk in acidity and minerally, with a tantalizing scour of steel, this Riesling is so clean and stimulating. With green apple, citrus and floral flavors, it straddles the boundary between dry and just off-dry. What a wonderful cocktail wine with puff pastry appetizers.
