Give this oaky Amarone a few more years in the bottle to allow the wood elements to come into line. Cherry fruit does exist beyond the lavish layers of Spanish cedar and toast, and the wine comes together nicely in the mouth thanks to its velvety tannins and smooth feel.

Campolieti is a fresh and fruity Ripasso with layers of dried blueberry, rum cake and spice followed by some very light mineral shadings. It boasts a crisp, clean mouthfeel and ends with a hint of vanilla and toasted almond.

This is an awkward, slightly unbalanced wine from northern Italy. It opens with intense notes of mature blackberry and oaky spice but follows through on the palate with sharp, steely acidity.

This is a smooth and rich Amarone with equal parts jammy fruit set against a smokey oak component. The wine slides nicely over the palate with a lavish, velvety texture and imparts more oak spice and mesquite on the close.

Burnt and harsh relative to the field, with sweaty leather and some barnyard on the nose. The palate keeps hold of that cooked quality with its charred burger and baked fruit flavors. Finishes hot and spicy, and a touch metallic.

Sweet aromas of butterscotch, cherry and caramel combine and carry through to the palate along with licorice, toast and minerals. But there’s a distinctly fiery note of alcohol that seems to dominate the palate. Firmly structured, this wine needs time to tone down and develop some nuance.

The new and old in the form of cherry, herbs, spices and dried fruits characterize this Amarone. A supple mouthfeel, full body and long finish are its other attributes. Yes, the tannins are rough, but the price certainly isn’t.

Amarone Capitel de’ Roari delivers a crisp, lean expression that showcases Valpolicella winemaking tradition. The only out-of-place elements are the oak shadings that comes across as toasted nut, leather and dried tobacco.

A floral nose with some leather, coffee and bread dough does nothing to turn one away. The raspberry flavors with light oak in support are nice but simple, while the finish is dry, fruity enough and layered. Best Buy.
