Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Just add this oloroso to the growing list of excellent Sherries from Lustau. This one is tellingly nutty on the nose, thus the hazelnut and walnut flavors are expected as they become part of a bigger painting that includes coffee, bitter chocolate and baked fruits. Warming and charming, with subtle acidity. Very elegant and refined.

This traditional wine from Lustau is made in the Cream style. It’s dark and pretty, with PX-ish prune and caramel aromas. It’s not as thick as Pedro Ximénez, and thus isn’t syrupy. But it’s certainly rich and full of cookie, molasses, maple and brown sugar flavors. For anyone who likes a sweet Sherry that’s balanced, this is a good place to go.

Dark brown in color, with sweet aromas of candied fruit, brown sugar and mocha. The palate is lively and warm, with zesty yet baked flavors of toffee, caramel and apricot. A little fiery and driving on the finish, with a lasting spice note. Excellent for an aged, dark-style Moscatel.

Immediately this strikes you as being elegant and refined. The nose is perfectly round, with oily, semi-rich aromas of baked fruits and almonds. The palate has more fruit and intensity than 99% of the finos out there, but there’s also a backdrop of nut, mushroom and dried apple that stands out before exploding in front of a smooth, stately finish.

A beautiful style of elevated Sherry that’s worth every cent if fine Sherry is to your liking. The nose is pure toffee, roasted nuts, apricot and mellow quince, while the key flavor is dried orange and the nuances hinted at by the aromas all reappear. Muscular but in perfect shape, with a finish as smooth as glass.

Textbook Manzanilla! Papirusa is a clean, mildly salinic offering with green banana and toast aromas. The palate is just salty enough, but the wine’s more about almond, apple and lemon peel than saline. And the feel and finish are nutty and warm. A full-bodied but refreshing style as only Lustau can do.

Lustau calls it dry but Los Arcos definitely has some aromatic and palate sweetness. The nose settles on brown sugar, peach, mixed nuts and honey. It’s not super tight or acidic, and thus the palate drips maple and molasses. Medium-bodied and balanced, but with that shot of sugar offset by honest but mellow acids.

More yellow than Lustau’s manzanilla, Jarana is a lovely, proper fino with a nose of iodine, lemon blossom and popcorn. The palate is staunch and doesn’t back down; the high-toned nut and citrus flavors seem classic and elevated. And the finish is intense and frames everything in walnut oil and toast.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
More yellow than most finos, with a strong, oily nose of popcorn and citric essence. The palate shows roasted corn, baked apple and salted almonds, while the finish is steady yet salty. This one really grabs your tongue and taste buds; it’s forceful, and in some ways it could probably benefit from better definition.

Round and honeyed on the nose, with brown sugar, flower notes, nuts and pretty much all that good amontillado offers. Flavors of white pepper, coffee and caramel have light citrus accents, and on the finish it dials things down and gets real narrow and precise. Very dry amontillado, but well made and true to the blueprint.
